Do you ever give up the right of way?

That is the thing. It DOES hurt. It causes confusion and slows everything down like you said especially when more than 2 cars/pedestrians are involved.

People think it is a courtesy but it really detracts from the natural flow of things.

Would you really rather get into an accident and deal with all the hassles that entails than yield the right of way, just once?

/edit: Of course I don't do it when it screws up other people. I do it when it promotes the smooth flow of traffic. Without some people making up for the mistakes of idiots, the accident rate would be ten times its current level.

..sometime I'll wave people ahead of me. I gain control of the intersection and make it safer for me.

I only give up the right of way in heavy traffic. If someone is trying to enter a highway, but there is a traffic is packed too tightly for an opening, then I believe in proper merging. Meaning in car in the lane goes forward, then a car can enter the highway, then a car in the lane goes forward.

Otherwise, I never give up the right of way. I think it is foolish and can cause accidents. The easier it is for people to predict what you are going to do, the safer things are going to be. Cause they certainly don't take precautions as it is. Pluse it wastes time.

Yielding the right of way is often nice or wise, but you need to be clear about it, or all you're doing is sitting there blocking traffic. And if someone else yields the right of way to you, take it and GO! Do not try to yield it back, or forsooth, I shall be sore vexed.

i only give it up when I'm in no particular rush. if I'm just taking my time, I'll let someone go instead of making them wait.

I am happy that I am at a point in my life where driving is nothing more than a minor annoyance and I don't waste my energy on getting worked up about minor crap like saving 2.5 seconds when I have the right of way and yield it to another driver.

I am not accusing you personally, but your way of thinking is what bugs me. In my opinion, you have the responsibility to follow the rules of the road (including your right of way) for the benefit of other drivers, not yourself. It is the same thing for why people need to use their blinker. It isn't for you, you obviously know you are turning, it is so other people can be aware. Same thing goes for right of way.

The scenario in my head right now (this happens EVERY DAY on the way home from work). Driving on a 2 lane (2 each way) road where a major highway exit merges onto this road on the right. People in the two lane highway SLOW DOWN or MOVE OVER to let people on the 2 lane highway, which causes all sorts of confusion for people since noone expects people to slam on their brakes and let people merge ONTO a road.

Now the tough part is that many times the MERGER is also at fault, by just forcing themselves in. So in this case, a simple YIELD would result in better traffic flow and reduced confusion for the OTHER drivers (which is the whole point in my opinion).

Sure, once in awhile when it's real busy and you can see that someone has been waiting and has a longer wait coming I will let them pull out in front of me. I figure someone will pay me back the favor sometime.

Even better are the ones that STOP at the bottom of the ramp! Makes me want to use the "thermonuclear traffic control" button on the dash!

I always do when I think the other person is a moron. Like inching, baiting then braking, etc. I would rather just get this person out of my way then be coming behind/to the side of me on my way through the intersection.

I think we are talking about different situations here. I was referring to stop sign situations where the driver on your right waves you through even though s/he should be taking the right of way. Another example are pedestrians that wave you on when you are waiting for them to cross the street (at least in California).

Freeway/2 lane situations are different. I will give up the right of way to keep the situation safe although I think those cases are rare exceptions to the rule.

Yes, I spend much of my working hours on the road. I give up the right of way to people who are to fuckin stupid to drive. If it saves me an accident, it's well worth it. Not to mention the fact that IF an accident w/ said stupid does happen, then I have to deal w/ that person also. Defensive, non-road rage driving FTW.

Rarely. It fucks up the rotation and then everybody starts to act like dumb assholes (this was quite common in CA, and people never seemed to learn).

Drivers think they are so darn nice when they sit and stare while you try to figure out what the hell they are doing.

I don't give up the right of way at intersections. It's too dangerous and confuses the rules. You can wave me through all you want, but if you have the right of way, I am not budging before you obey the rules.

I will let someone in line, or let them pull out, though.

Whether or not I let you do something often rests on whether or not you have used your turn signal.
