Do you ever get the feeling the media hates computer enthusiasts

link this story seems a little slanted. That and all the anti-piracy propoganda out there today, I feel like the bad apples are making a bad name for the rest of us

thoughts?

I think so. When you read something like this:

Conduit for Piracy
Kastner also suggested that white boxes sold internationally may include a "bonus" for the buyer: pirated software.

...without referencing that this is more of the exception than the rule.

As if to imply its probably "more ethical" to buy from a large company like Dell or Compaq.

"In many foreign nations, people are unwilling to pay for brand names, and they literally assemble the boxes themselves in small, family-run operations," he said, adding that these machines often are sold with a bundle of illegally copied software.

What the fsck? 😕

What is so anti-white box about that. You go to almost any asian country and it is considered standard that they will slip you a burnt CD with Win2K and a serial No scribbled on it with your custom PC. One of the reasons Dell and Co are having such a hard time penetrating thos markets. Something like 97% of software is pirated in Indonesia according to a recent study.

What the fsck? 😕

It is true in southeast Asia and in here too (Israel).

wait... ok, so what these people are saying is: people would rather buy what they want instead of prepackaged and prebuilt trash. this hurts the makers of trash.

is that what this is about? i bought a micron a while back, and it was ok, but i'd MUCH rather build the thing myself and not have to deal with getting a 28.8 modem that i don't need for 20 bucks. plus, i don't know if this is the same argument, but upgrading my own machine works a lot better than having to make dell do it.

Actually, Michael Dell thinks that people who upgrade their computers belong to the "lunatic fringe". He actually said that in one interview! The example he used is a person who upgrades his PC's sound-card.

Holy crap! What does that make us folks who build their entire boxes? Raving nut cases?

Wait... Considering what I see in OT... Maybe he's right? :Q 😉 😀

I see absolutely no slant in this article.

I used to work for an office of the U.S. Embassy in Bangkok and practically everyone I knew had white-box systems put together at a place called Porntip Plaza (said like "Pontip"). Every single one of them had pirated OSes installed.

Pirated materials are standard fare in all of Southeast Asia and, at least to my knowledge, Korea.

In the U.S. such things are probably the exception, not the rule. Internationally though, as the author suggests, piracy is certainly the rule.
