i couldnt be happier with my life and whats going on around me. maybe you feel like YOUR world is coming to an end. the kids i see smile and play with toys all the time. maybe you think things are getting bad because you are just now starting to read the news and follow politics. im sure it seemed great when you were a kid because you were oblivious to everything.

and the heat? doesnt it get hot every summer? =) and why would your financial situation have anything to do with whether the world is coming to an end?

no im not rich. im a poor unemployed college student going further into debt every semester.

I'm not scared. It would suck to die a horrible painful death or live in a post-apocalyptic shanty town, but Earth was here for a long time before us, and it will be here a long time after we're gone. We're a speck of time in the history of the universe. Makes me laugh how self important we think we are. :)

As for a timeframe?ultimately it's hard to say. The main risks are nuclear winter and/or an asteroid collision IMO. One we can control, the other we cannot...

Quite certain of it. I don't let it bother me though. The forces at hand (Overpopulation, Republicans, reality TV) are out of my realm of direct control. Other than the occasional futile nudge in the right direction (voting, changing the channel when reality TV is on), I live my life exactly as I would if I was as much of a pollyana as everyone else.

If you're in a position to actually do something significant about all this mess, I hope you understand the gravity of the human condition. If that's not your role in life, believe whatever you like - I could care less. :p

[N.B. I don't think the world is coming to an end, it is quite durable. What's coming to an end is humanity as we know it.]

Well, in some respects the world is always coming to an end. We live during a time period when the advancement of culture, technology, and human expansion in general have become so exponentially rapid that we experience the end of of societies, of traditions, of species, and of many other aspects of life that were commonplace to us. Methods of communication that become archaic for instance, or even animals and plants that no longer exist in the known world. From a human viewpoint, the world continues to come to an end and a new one begins with the birth of techonology and the fruits of generations of labor and mindpower.

The planet Earth itself is probably slated for another few billions years before the sun expands to encompass it, assume nothing more catastophic happens in the mean time. I doubt humans will evolve fast enough to meet the demands that we create on the planet and it's other life, as well as one another. We probably will not be around until the end of the Earth, much less the end of time, but who knows. Even if our race were to die out, life would likely continue and perhaps elsewhere in the universe more intelligent life exists as well. Progress has always had a cost and it is a pity in many respects, but I am not one to judge the direction of humanity as I'm not exactly objective in that arena. :)

I had a dream where a Blackhole developed not too far away from earth. you could look at the sky and see it. I woke up in a cold sweat.

"The End" is plausible and more acheivable today then any other period in history, but it lies within our hands. If we can focus on what's best for future generations, we can avoid it. Get too self-indulgent/self-absorbed/greedy, then we'll head off the ledge.

We have been given numerous warnings already, choose to ignore them if you will, but don't expect fantasies to protect from reality.

Since the dawn of man every generation has thought that their generation would be the last.

So, it is only plausible that we all should think this.

True enough, but since the '50's the "End" has been possible, not just something plausible.

The whole concept is born of religious tradition, begining as a "God" induced happening, mainly due to the fact Man(humanity) had no way of doing it himself. Now Man has numerous ways of acheiving it without a "God". The concept that once was "thought" is now the reality that can be "done". It is now our responsibility to ensure "The End" doesn't happen, if we slip up....

the world is coming to an end and its not something to be scared of. you should be relieved that all the suffering will be over soon. be happy for all the unborn future generations that won't have to endure it.
