well i usually clear the area out first, dig a nice hole and mulch the area well. make sure its getting an appropriate amount of sunlight for the type of plant. i weed my garden very well so it doesn't usually get crowded out or anything. just keep an eye on it from the kitchen window and all will be well 🙂
 
yes 🙁

let me elaborate ... I feel that if I were to dig a deeper hole, I would be able to get better cover. I could then get some better shots off. Then the shoots would feel more like true growths.
