I use fork/spoon. Fried Rice is hard to eat with chopsticks since it doesn't stick together. It's a pain in the ass more than anything to try to use chopsticks. I do use chopsticks for everything else when I eat Japanese or Chinese food though.

Tried chopsticks a few times and use them OK but you have to ask for them at our restaurants. I never remember to ask, so as a consequence, never really use them at all.

If you have to ask for chopsticks at a Chinese restaurant, hint that's not a Chinese restaurant. It should be the other way round, you should have to ask for forks and they should laugh at you for doing so ;)

Hell no, I usually just shovel the rice into my mouth. If it comes in one of those carrying rectangles they give you with a handle then it's even better because I can just dump it in.

Pasta is the only thing that chopsticks rival a fork with. My girlfriend is Asian and she refuses to use chopsticks now that she has easy access to both (forks and chopsticks).

If you are non-Asian and want to be smug, you can use them when around other people.

I think they work better than a fork for salad too.

Not really, many don't put them out anymore due to having to throw them away. Chopsticks are one of those things that aren't very 'green' for the environment.

The higher end restaurants usually include them with the place settings.

I have no problem asking for a pair nor feel slighted they weren't on the table to begin with.

Ok that's not what I meant though. I mean if you are eating at a Chinese place that gives you forks cause well everyone there + the cook is white (jking) then you are doing it wrong.

Never thought of that. I'll have to give it a try next time.

Since I met my wife 10+ years ago I use them a lot. I prefer them for a lot of foods and don't even think about it anymore than when I grab a spoon or a fork.

A lot of veggies are easier with them too. To me it's a nicer experience to place the food in my mouth than to bite it off the fork.

Many don't realize (at least Japanese people) have forks too for things like steak and pork chops and the like. If they have to eat with a knife they will partner it with a fork. I know a few that use chopsticks with a knife though.

I call chopsticks Hashi mostly, I have even started using some Japanese words unconsciously. I'd like to learn Japanese but I am bombared with other things now that benefit me financially :)

lol this reminds me back of old UO days, there was this chinese guild, where they would raid with 100+ people. There were only a few good players, but they ruled by zerg.

We started a guild called "We Eat With Forks" to battle them. We had war forks. It never really took off though, but just a funny side thought.

I have tried using chopsticks the right way when I tried sushi for my first time. I gave up and just used it like a fork. LOL. How does one manage to eat rice with those anyway? Rice is many little small things, so you need a fork, or spoon or otherwise "shovel" type instrument. It would be like trying to move sand with a fork lift.

I almost always use a chopstick. I notice a lot of other asian people use a spoon to eat fried rice. Most people in my family also use a chopstick to eat fried rice.

Wow. You eat rice with one chopstick.

the japanese usually use "sticky rice", it sort of clumps so easy to pick up.

Short grain rice. The extra starch makes it sticky. Perfect for eating with chopsticks, making sushi, making into sticky rice cake desserts and more. Not nearly as common in Chinese cooking, though you do see it.

Nope.
But I use chopsticks when eating rice with additional dishes. It's easier to pick up specific pieces of food with chopsticks, such as a piece of veggie, or some finely chopped pork with bean curd. The smaller pieces doesn't pick up easily with the fork stabbing and scooping it only results in it sliding off easily. For eating asian foods with multiple dishes, getting a good ratio of the ingredients in your mouth is just as important for an enjoyable experience as the food itself.

Absolutely this. But the bowl + shovelling technique I talked about above really is how most Chinese people eat back at home. Pick and chose from the veggie and meat dishes on the table with your chopsticks. Bring what you want back to your bowl of rice. Bring the bowl up to your mouth and just shovel in a mouthful with your chopsticks.

I can eat with chopsticks, though I usually don't. Only time I did was when it was a proper rice bowl with sticky rice.

I'm neither asian nor a pretentious douchebag, so I don't eat anything with chop sticks.

Yes. It is. Unless you're Asian or in Asia, it's pretty fucking smug and pretentious.
