I almost always use a chopstick. I notice a lot of other asian people use a spoon to eat fried rice. Most people in my family also use a chopstick to eat fried rice.
I use whatever is handy. I wouldnt say I'm some master chop stick user but I can get foo din my mouth and walk away full using them. If they are available I use them, if not a spoon or fork works too.

Pasta is the only thing that chopsticks rival a fork with. My girlfriend is Asian and she refuses to use chopsticks now that she has easy access to both (forks and chopsticks).
If you are non-Asian and want to be smug, you can use them when around other people.
Yeah even in Asia they typically don't eat rice with chopsticks if it's on a plate. If it's in a bowl though they do. Usually the method is to raise the bowl to your mouth and use the chopsticks to shovel the rice into your mouth.
You see restaurants here though that serve rice on a plate and don't give you a spoon. Strange.
