Do you eat any dried fruit?

I have a sweet tooth like a damn crack baby and have often looked for ways to deal with it without honking down on candy like Oprah on her last meal. I've looked into dried fruits before and as recently as yesterday and still 90% of them are just a Politically Correct candy, sweetened to the hilt with sugar.

What I could find was dried prunes, unsweetened. They taste like a slightly less sweet raisin. Also unsweetened apricots. I took some to work and both were overall satisfying. It appears difficult to find unsweetened dried fruit, however. As almost always is the case, though, nature is inferior to chemical labs for taste. Other than watermelon (which I enjoy eating until I'm bloated and feel sick) there is nothing on the planet I've ever eaten unprocessed which was as good as something out of packet with the words "added sugar" on them.

I think i will buy some more dried apricots on the way home, though :)

I hear you; I'm also trying my damnedest to cut down my sugar addiction.

I buy dried apricots, prunes, raisins and cranberries from the bulk food section at my supermarket. Usually I snack on the apricots by themselves, and I add prunes, raisins or cranberries to non-sugary cereal.

I avoid packaged dried fruit, as most types seem to have added sugar, preservatives or other chemicals.

Thanks, I totally didn't think of that. There is a big section and in the same way I automatically, subconsciously filter out internet ads I had done the same with the non-candy section of the bulk food. i will check it out on the way home. I need to be sure it's labelled appropriately though indicating no addition of sugar. The only thing that should be on the package is whatever preservative they put in.

All the raisins I saw had sugar added. A guy in a cube over has figs with nothing added, I want to try one.

If you have a farmer's market nearby with fresh berries, these are way better than candy. And no, you CANNOT get good quality berries at a supermarket. I used to live in the country and pick blackberries, raspberries and black raspberries from wild berry bushes and they shouldn't even have the same name as the crap you buy in plastic cartons in the produce section. If you haven't tried them, find some way to do so.

My absolute favorite dried fruit is dried mango.

The back of the package lists only one ingredient: mangoes.

BTW I've still not "acclimted" to the prunes. I was nearly kicked out of the family room last night *shame*

I cannot find mangos not full of sugar. I nearly burned down my local grocery store because 99% of it had added sh*t. I have found prunes, figs, apple, apricots that were dry with nothing more than preservatives. I like the prunes but as mentioned, wow. Talk about gas.

i would love pineapple unsweetened.

Do you have a Trader Joe's nearby? If so, you can pick up some dried mango's. They are my favorite by far. Be careful though, they also sell ones with sugar added which is totally unnecessary. The good ones just say "mangoes" on the ingredients list.

Just realized that this thread has already touched on mango's...but trader joes is definitely a good place to pick some up and try if you have on nearby.

No trader joes that I'm aware of. I just raided the bulk bins but the only non-sweetened were apples and apricots, then some prepackaged figs (yum) also unsweetened.

Dried fruits are my most favorites. In fact I prefer them more, over cooked foods. Fruits of any kind are first preference while selecting food to eat. I don't like pizza, burger, ice cream, meat or fish but only dry fruits are best for me in life.

Hahaha, One time I demolished like half a pack of dried apricots. I couldn't sleep the entire night I had such bad gas. It dehydrated me too I think.
