I eat 2.5-3lbs of tuna a week. Tuna is very rich in selenium which neutralizes mercury's toxic effect.

are you sure about that?

Yes

i thought that the jury was still out on that one. afaik research is still being done on mercury selenium reactions in humans.

Secondly, there have been outbreaks of mercury poisoning in japan in fishing communities that mainly fish tuna. historically they called it the "drunken cat disease" because their cats would start walking like they were drunk after eating fish with too much mercury.

I think it is safe to say that there have been verifiable reports of mercury poisoning from eating fish, but there is yet to be similar evidence showing that selenium will negate the effects of mercury. the same goes for the claim that the mercury in fish like tuna is oxidated and will not affect humans after consumption. There is not enough evidence to show what the balance of selenium and mercury should be even if they do cancel each other out. both are toxic substances to humans on their own, so having too much of either will probably still cause negative effects.

have you read some research that I haven't on the topic? I haven't seen anything that points to a definate causal correlation between selenium and mercury, nor what the balance or ratios of either substance should be if it should be true that they negate one another.

Tuna doesn't have enough mercury to do you any harm.

nope. one serving of tuna isn't going to do any damage. but if you eat it every day for the next few years, you might be at risk.

Thai Chicken Lean Cuisine mixed with one 3 oz packed of your favorite albacore = 5 minute delicious low calorie high protein meal that won't taste like fish.

Hmm, I haven't had a tuna sandwich in 2 years. When I was a kid I use to like taking Dorito nacho chips and sticking them in my tuna sandwich. Ewwww....

I haven't eaten any kind of fish in probably 10 years. Only stuff I can eat is stuff I've JUST caught and cook within a couple hours......halibut being the last one.

I converted over to salmon. Now I just have to worry about PCB contamination. The trick I use with canned salmon is to add a bit of lemon juice, to hide the fishy taste.

Salmon, being largely a fresh water fish Also has a much higher rate of parasites. You've gotta be sure its cooked really well.

After reading this thread I had to make tuna helper for lunch. I happened to look at nutrition facts. 290 calories prepared at 5 servings damn I just ate 1500 calories in one meal. Almost no fat though with 60 grams of protein(two packets of tuna). Its supposed to feed a family I only weigh 150 pounds.

Tuna salad is a staple of my diet. Good stuff! The mayonaisse probably isn't the healthiest, but you don't need much of it to make good tuna salad. Just enough to hold everything together. And the secret ingredient is horseradish. Really gives it a good kick.

Smart Balance Omega-3 Plus Light Mayonaise, for the nguyen!

Well you guys succeeded in making me go to Wal-Mart after work to pick up some cans of tuna. 😉 Mmmmm... haven't had a tuna sandwich in a long time.

If I eat meat, it's tuna. Oh and I'll occasionally eat talapia. Now before all of you start calling me a hypocrite, please go back and read my vegetarian posts. I always say I don't care if others follow my choices, and I'm not a 100% fanatic about anything.

Now if you are making a sexist comment, then yes, all the time.
