Just got in and received an email saying my immediate boss won't be in today. I just got a delivery of (15) Dells that need to be up and running on Monday. Do you think I should do it or screw around all day?

Automatic installation routine? Get one of these set up and installing 15 PC's will take about 15 minutes to set up. Then you can screw around all day ;)

Get a couple done today and when the boss comes back tomorrow, it'll look like you got something accomplished. :p

Unfortunately we don't purchase high volume of machines so it wouldn't be worth it to set it up. We do about 20 PCs a year with 50 employees.

You decide.

That's how you get to know a person. You hang out with them EVERYWHERE they go, but not just ANYWHERE, but everywhere. Not like in the bathroom or anything, but when you meet their family, how they act around them, and the way they present themselves to people they don't even know, you know what I mean?

Now that is awesome to know about how a person will run their life.

So you're a marine, you train in bootcamp. But when you go on duty, you only make it look like you're working hard when the sergant walks by.

In time of war, you are in a tight situation. You don't know what to do? Try to think back... "screw around, look good in front of the boss."

Likewise with your job. Time comes when you really need to perform, the laziness catches up with you, hits so hard, that when you try to remember, everything is just blank. Lose your job, end up in the trailer down by the river.

If they came in today and you dont do any, wont your boss ask you tomorrow why they are still sitting there?

I work nights, so the boss is always "out" so the answer to your question is, yes, I do work when the boss is out. If I didnt, I probably wouldnt have this job very long.

Unbox all computers. Take one and nuke it. Reinstall OS and drivers. Run Windows Update. Configure as necessary. Image drive and then dump to other 14 machines with Ghost Multicast. Done! Knocking that out in an 8 hour shift would be a piece of cake.

Yeah I do work, but I tend to leave early as well. I can really get all my work done in about 4 -6 hours and there is NO extra work around the office. So if I get all my work done and the boss is out, I leave - but the work has to be done and done well.

its your call but like archiloco said best do some work today and split the spacing out between 2 days! :D

i always have something to show my boss when he comes back from a business trip or something, no matter how trivial, because that way it shows that i work when he's not around... :D

That's what I was about to say. Try as I might, I can't really keep myself busy for more than 8/40 hours a week. Every time I push to take on more responsibility, I sternly get told to cool my heels *or else*

<shrug>

wtf can be expected of me?

I work even if my boss is out, which most of the time is the case, but this is government, so it is a lot more laid back than corporate.
I set my own project schedule, but it also means that I do all the work from conception to roll-out.

I can't say that I wouldn't be able to keep myself busy. I could. Don't get me wrong. I get my work done and I do it well. I'm working on my 7th year on the job and it gets harder and harder to keep up with the proactiveness each year. I'm still a favorite here and my reviews show for it.

I do one a year and it is worth it. Nothing like being able to just put a DVD in the drive and walk away. Ghost is even better.

Also, yes, we do work when the boss it out. Probably more than normal.
