So I sent a thank-you email the day after the interview. Two weeks later, I sent a follow-up to inquire where he was at in the hiring process. He responded saying they were still interviewing candidates and will notify me when a decision is made. I check with the headhunter...got the same response but was also told that the company likes me and have interest in me.

So that was last Thursday. I got the impression that this is a job the candidate has to show a lot of interest to be offered. He has the phone number included in his signature, is it appropriate to call for a follow up? Or do I just wait til they notify me?

They have 3-4 similar vacancies to fill, btw.

You just gotta wait it out.
Companies take FOREVER to setup interviews, get approval on spending, have meetings about who they like the most, have follow up interviews, get final approval for offer, etc.

That's what they tell you when you didn't get the job. If you're lucky, you might still get it a few weeks / months down the line, but it basically means you didn't "pop out" to them and meet the criteria of being exactly what they were looking for. If you do get it, but later on down the line, that means that they basically settled for you because they couldn't find someone that fit what they were really looking for.

I had an interview with a company where I was told I was a very strong candidate for the position, but they still had to go through the paces as I was one of the first to interview. (BS or not? You decide.)

I did the customary 2 week follow up, and got essentially the same response. Did the same thing as you and followed up with the recruiter a week or so later and basically yet another stonewall. After week 5 of follow-ups, I stopped caring. At that point they were either fishing for resumes, dragging their feet or didn't want me. Either way, I had other opportunities to pursue, and like when dating if you're not planning on fucking me then I'm gonna go sleep with someone else because I have needs too.

Finally as things progressed with OTHER offers, I took the time to call the recruiter a month or two later and told them I was no longer interested in the position.

Well, for the better or worse I decided to follow up again.

Who knows...I figure it's customary to do a weekly follow up, especially after they've shown interest in my background after the interview.

I only follow up ONCE after the interview. If they REALLY liked you, they would follow up with you.

Atleast, that's what happened with me when I got hired as an Intern. It was easier for me, because I'd already developed a friendship with the person in charge of the IT stuff at the company and they really wanted me on board, so after the formal interview. I sent a thank you note, got a really nice email back with a lot of advice for my next steps after college and then a call 3 days later with an offer.

I am sure you did that with utmost respect and professionalism.

I typically know by the end of the first interview if I'm a good fit for the job and if they want me. So I don't call them or ask. If they want me, they know where to find me.

Although I'm not usually in a position where I need the job.

I'll usually do the thank you, follow up in a week or so. If you don't hear something like that indicates they want you, but just are clearing some red tape at the point you probably need to let it go. I know I've been strung along for weeks with waiting for various approvals.
