Say that out loud. I dare you. Your life will become hell.

I learned this the hard way. Do I consider myself a PC tech? Yes. I can build, maintain, repair, and upgrade computer systems. Do I tell people that anymore? No 😀 Once people know you're good with computers, it's non-stop "can you fix my computer" or "can you help me learn how to use my computer" or "my computer has a virus, will you remove it?" Not that that's bad, and that's actually how I got a lot of my experience, but now that I have more responsibilities (college, job) and more interests, I don't have time to fix people's stuff unless I'm getting paid for it. I don't advertise the fact that I'm good with computers anymore. I'm sure others on this board have encountered similar situations 🙂

Well... I think that everyone at my family and work (in IT) consider me a PC tech, but I don't. If I could lay a multi-meter on a board and solder on a resistor, I'd consider myself MORE of a tech, but really I'm just a hack.

Only if there's money involved.

Like Kaido said, once people know you're a tech, all kinds of favors are asked....and then I feel bad charging because they're friends....so I don't do favors anymore.

A PC Tech? No. A Windows tech? Sort of.

I hate helping people though. I will fix their problem. The next day, they call me telling me their internets not working, and blame it on me, although its either their stupidity, or their childrens fault.

I learned a valuable lesson.

The largest computer related problem today usually can be found between the chair and the keyboard.

I do alright. I'm on the far left of Geekbabe. I couldn't set up and maintain a network if my life depended on it. I can string CAT5 from a router and find a wireless signal, but beyond that I'm lost.
I can build a mobo out of a box of pieces and make a hard drive out of a bar of soap. If I can't fix it, it can't be fixed.
I have some strong points, but there's so much to IT I don't think I'll ever know all that I'd like to, and I'll probably never understand half of what I know 😀
I try to learn what I have to and rely on everyone else for the rest. That's where Anandtech comes in.

Indeed. PEBKAC has reached epidemic proportions.
