Heh, my school employs a google-like crawler that databases this kind of stuff and can actually compare it against out work for structural similarities - i.e. even word replace is defeated. Just to piss that crawler off, I now web-publish all my work as well, from java code to english papers.

Now I do use Sparknotes to cheat my way out of having to read some of those godawful boring-as-death books, but that's it.

Cheating is really just accelerated learning. :)

I don't know the answer, I read the answer, now I know the answer...... ;)

Only temporarily.

Like you remember all the crap you learned in High School.

What's the formula for deriving the angle of diffraction of a ray of light? No googling.

I used to download essays and read them for the resources and references... It's so easy when someone else looks up everything for you.. Then just write it out yourself.

It's not cheating. It's called using your available resources wisely.

:D

I actually have teachers who call it that and don't frown upon it as much as they "should" so long as it's not obvious plagiarism.

When I am working with a problem set on positrons, bose-einstein condensation, fermi surfaces, and matter-antimatter imbalances, and its due a day from now, then yes, google is my best friend.

i once tried to cheat, but after copying down a whole derivation i noticed that the website had maxwell's equations wrong. never again, but more out of mistrust than morality.

It's easier to use Google than to use a library. Especially when something needs to be translated.
Most times the net has nearly no help to offer, though.

If the teacher writes the questions well enough, then cheating on the internet is extremely difficult <--- my opinion- I'm a teacher.

The main way anyone could cheat would be to come to forums (such as these) and ask their question. I've answered many homework questions before on here for students in math and physics... However, those questions have all been of the type where simply seeing an example is sufficient for many students to solve similar problems... kinda like "how do you factor x^2 - 4x -5" - showing them how to do a problem like that will hopefully help them to do the other problems on their homework. Teachers don't always provide good explanations or good examples. And, if the student is just being lazy and not trying to understand, then they're going to be screwed anyway when it's test time. I don't recall ever seeing a higher level thinking question being asked/answered on these forums (homework question). The types of questions are usually basic knowledge questions.

example: instead of asking: do dark colors absorb more heat energy from the sun than light colors?
A better question would be: If you lived in a hot climate, which of these colors would be suitable for painting your house: (list of colors) Why?

I had a class in college where someone cheated. The professor handed back the papers, and instead of giving this person their paper, they got a single piece with the URL to the original content on it along with their grade, lol. I think they had some other consequences as well.
