Do you care about your physician's appearance?

So I'm in the research lab talking to a guy doing his [surgical] fellowship and we start talking about how physicians dress. We agreed that the women in the medical care industry are all about dressing to the nine - almost businesswoman like. We also agreed that there are male physicians that also dress very well but then there is also the group of physicians that pretty much just wear just a T-shirt under their lab coats and some that just wear scrubs, no coat at all.

Personally, I would not give a hoot whether my physician was wearing a 3 piece suit or a T-shirt and jeans as long as they can take care of me.

They better not look sick or like they don't practice good hygiene. Otherwise, no.

Edit: Ah man...OP below.

Yes, I do.

I care because I rather not have my physician come to me in a clown suit saying, "You got cancer. You're going to die in two weeks."

Unless he is unshaven, wears a sportcoat and walks with a cane - I want him to be professionally dressed in a doctor's coat.

Any particular reason why?

How they dress? No. How good/bad their personal hygeine appears? Hell yeah!

You would think that a doctor (of any kind) would be all about being clean, tidy, germ-free, etc. I've seen some docs/dentists that I wanted to ask them to bathe in rubbing alcohol before they got near me.

If I'm seeing a doc and he/she is clean cut, doesn't look hung over, has well-manicured hands that smell like hand-sanitzer, then I'm happy. I could care less if they are wearing Bermuda shorts and flip flops.

WTF is up with posts not being in order.

Are you new here? The out of order post thing is MONTHS old. And the rest of the forum not working correctly goes back to 1999. 😛

Because if he fits the description above, he is House MD, and he can figure out any sickness on Earth! Otherwise, doctor's coat shows you respect professional guidelines, and, it possibly reduces the transmission of germs and grease stains from your clothes onto my clothes and body.

You would think a forum would be able to keep posts in chronological order. Handles thousands of user names and traffic, store information like passwords and profiles, but order of posts....no. Kind of like the residents that can tell you everything on paper but when you put the surgical stapler in their hands "It won't close" *SLAPS FOREHEAD*

I'm going to disappoint you a little bit here:

Lab coats are FILTHY!

Also just because you wear a lab coat it does not mean you act professional 😛 Trust me on this one.

I would say no, but I just got done watching Canonball Run II, and if I had a physician like that I would definitely say yes lol.

Dude, I'm going to disappoint you a little bit here:

Lab coats are FUCKING FILTHY!

I did not say that putting on a lab coat will magically make you start acting professionally 🙂 Would you rather have a flight attendant and pilot dressed in rags and sandals? How about policeman? Hotel workers? Mechanics?

Uniforms exist for a reason. The underlying reason may be outdated, but the image and perception they convey still stand the test of time: if you put on the uniform, you are a professional who earned this right. You know what you are doing. This is the message.

See, I think uniforms are nowadays deceiving, and like you said it gives the people around them an image. I'm not trying to convince you or others that nicely dressed physicians are terrible but please don't be fooled into thinking that the guy sporting the Hermes tie, and shirt is better than the guy wearing a tshirt and chinos with a stethoscope around their neck.😀

Personally, I don't want my surgeon wearing a tie to the OR. I suppose I wouldn't care what my doctor wore in theory, but I don't want it to look like they are even more lazy and unstressed than I am. Therefore they should dress better than I do. In particular, I don't want to look like I'm the more professional of the two when I rode in on my bike and am wearing a t-shirt.

As long as he/she is clean shaven...and in clean clothes, I don't care if it's a suit and tie or lab coat, or jeans and t-shirt.

I had to go to San Francisco a couple of years ago for an evaluation on my back. One of the best neurosurgeons in the city...he walks in for the appointment about 10 minutes late, rumpled clothes, unshaven, shoes untied...looked like he just crawled out of bed. Turned out he DID just crawl out of bed...he had just spent all night putting some guy back together after a bad car accident...caught an hour of sleep in one of the rooms at the hospital before our appointment.
Good doctor though. He put me through a very thorough exam, pointed out things in my MRI that MY neurosurgeon had either overlooked or dismissed...then told the insurance company things they did NOT want to hear...and told me my career in construction was forever over.

I'd be more worried about their personal life, and that's something you don't really know.

Exibit 1: This weird doctor that lived next to us had a fire in his house and never cleaned up the damge, he also had tons of pornos, and his house was in a really huge mess. His mom died in there and he let the body laying around for a while until cops got involved. She was sick mentally so she pooped and peed all over. He never cleaned it up.

He also smoked like, probably 4 packs a day. Very dirty guy overall. There's this weird yellow scum that is seeping through his house overhang.

He died of lung cancer recently.

Yeah... I would not want him to touch me. 😛

Berger? Hu? McCllelan? Berven? Deviren?

I used to work at UCSF with the spine surgeons there.

Mine is overweight but clean, dresses well, and has good hygiene. Personally I wouldn't mind if he wasn't so well dressed, or morbidly obese, because his credentials make up for any shortcomings that he may have appearance wise.

I'd prefer jeans and a Tshirt to anything. I'd rather he spent his time on his job, and not trying to impress people with appearance.
