We all know it's inevitable, the government simply cannot keep it's hands out of a huge "pie" such as the 'net for long. In this particular case, the states are simply finding out what anyone with half a brain has been saying all along -- you can't endlessly and unreasonanbly increase taxes on cigs indefinitely without the people finding other avenues to get them. Once they start enforcing laws requiring the vendors to provide the names of the buyers to authorities, buyers will simply start providing fake names for the purchases and use PO Boxes.....

WHat about sites that sell from overseas? THis is going to be very hard to stop any site that does not fall under ATF Jursidiction. (IE SWiss and Indian reservations)

the cigarette company already do most of the tax evasion. Supposely, if the cigarettes are manufactured here and sold here, they are heavily taxed. To by pass this, they would load them to a boat, go out for a ride and come back.... labeled them as imported and just pay the regular state imposed tax on it.

I heard this first hand from a friend who works at P Morris. Anyone have a link to verify?

AFAIK, cigs are taxes by the state in which they are sold.

This is what happens when you try to ban, or tax into ban any kind of vice. You simply drive it underground.

EVERY state legislature was warned that over taxing would have this effect, and none listened.

It's time for a tea party.

This is what I tell everyone I know who smokes (besides "quit now"):

Go to www.yesmoke.com. This is the cheapest place to buy cigs ($15 a carton and free shipping), and not even the feds, much less the states collect taxes on them. (yes, there are both federal and state taxes on smokes)

And don't be fooled. These taste just like the ones you buy in the stores. I know, I taste tested a few that friends have bought. I couldn't tell a difference. They said that the euro Marboros are ever so slightly more mild than the swiss or US ones. I couldn't tell.

I was gonna buy from that site untill I saw that they were Euro Marlboros. Maybe I will try them next, but they are sold outta my brand. Are they gonna be able to get the taxes back from previous sales ? I hope not, I have been getting butts for $30.00 per carton shipped. The local price is the stores here is $7 to $8 per pack. MAybe it is time to open a po box.

We need more taxes on tobacco products. Then we need even more taxes on them. We should end them only when the tobacco companies are DEAD!

Don't like my views on the subject? TOUGH SH8! :|

Fine, Harvey. But there must be some part of you that still knows doing this will NOT stop people from smoking. The black market is ALREADY shaping up as it is. Will you feel better when tobacco dealers kill innocent kids in drive by shootings and there's a dealer lurking outside every school who wont card your kids when they want smokes?

Harvey, it's time to put the blame where it belongs, with the individual who made the choice to smoke, and continue smoking.

Prohobition had little to no effect on drinking.

The war on drugs has had little to no effect on drug abuse.

High taxes and/or bans will have little effect on smoking.

But ALL have lead to rampant crime waves that end up harming innocent people.

It's time to admit reality, here.

Sorry, sonny boy, but I'm 61 years old. I lost seven friends in five years, and I sat with one of them as he pulled his last breath and saw all of the others up to within days of their death. All of them were in their teens when they started. There were no warnings on the packs, and there were ads on radio and TV promoting the health ??? benefits of one brand over another and stating that doctors preferred one over another. The tobacco industry knew, then, that tobacco was addictive and carcinogenic, but they kept the results of their research secret and bribed legislators to keep it that way.

I'm not making this up. It's all documented. I think every tobacco exec for the last fifty years should be tried for crimes against humanity and given the same sentence they gave my friends -- a long, slow painful death. :| :| :|

Then, maybe I can give more of a damn about how stupid younger people shouldn't start smoking in the first place.

I ordered a carton of Marlboro Mediums from a website that arrived from St. Petersbug, Russia. They tasted more like a bad cigar than a Marlboro, the printing on the paper was a different, and they didn't have the "miles" on the packs.

nothing wrong with that.

BTW-I used to order from yessmoke.com by the carton before I quit. Never could taste a difference in either camel or marlboro.

There are Indian Web sites that because of their "sovereign nation" status, claim that they do not have to tax or provide the info to the host state of the Feds.

Just some more info - yesmoke is being sued by Philip Morris, so watch out on future orders. They are talking about confiscating orders and/or charging the duty tax when they get to the US. Best option I have found is ordering from the Indian sites, they are totally tax free, and they are not required to give out any info to state/federal agencies. They are a couple good sites that I order from with good prices. Better than $30 - $40 a carton!

there already is tax on all mail order purchases (excluding those made by tax-exempt entities). its just that its not the company's responsibility to collect it (unless they operate in that state), so they don't, and consumers think that since the company isn't collecting it they don't have to pay tax, when in reality all they're doing is committing tax evasion.

Or you can just ride across the 301 bridge into Virginia, ride 2 miles down to the nearest tobacco warehouse, get your carton for $23 and fill up your tank for $1.10 a gallon. Get back on the highway, come back across the bridge, wave hi to the billboard proclaiming "Maryland, The Smoke-Free State"...oh, wait, watch out for those border cops! Because it's illegal to posess more than 2 packs of cigarettes with a VA tax stamp on them in Maryland.

Then, maybe I can give more of a damn about how stupid younger people shouldn't start smoking in the first place.

They knew from the late 50s and early 60s that smoking was unhealthy.

All your stories (I have my own) simply show that your friends did not want to quit, until it was too late. What the tobacco industry knew, and did not admit means nothing. What was common knowledge LONG before your friends got sick means everything. Had they actually wanted to quit, they would have quit 40 years ago when it became common knowledge that smoking was unhealthy.

You can kick, scream and cry all you want. But ask yourself this: Why is it millions upon millions of people have quit smoking over the past 40 years, and are still alive... but your friends did not, and are dead? Who is to blame for that?

BTW, smoking has nearly (and will) kill my mother. It has killed two uncles, an aunt, a friend, and many of my friend's parents. It has caused permanent damage to my own lungs. You will not see me blaming anyone but them and myself for our irresponsible and self destructive actions.

I don't blame tobacco companies for what they've done any more than I would blame alcohol companies, McDonalds, or casinos. They are trying to sell a product. I do not expect them to advertise that thier products are unhealthy. It's contrary to their business. It is up to ME to determine what is good for me, and what is not.

Stop passing the buck, Harvey. Put the blame where it belongs and stop thinking that putting tobacco companies out of business will stop people from smoking. On the contrary, you'll only desroy the economy, and set a dangerous precident that people are not responsible for their own actions. Not to mention you'll create a deadly black market that makes the war on drugs and prohibition look like a preschool party.

yeah , i laugh how everyone likes buying from dell cause there's "no tax". It's the same for those who go clothes shopping in NJ for the no tax savings, and live in NYC. *technically*, you're supposed to pay NY tax on those items...
