Do you bruise more as you get older?

I've seemed to notice that if I bang something I'll get a bruise. And it stays around longer and seems more discolored. For example bang your knee or wrist or elbow and I know I'll get a bruise. I've only really started noticing this the last year or two (38 years old).

Talking to coworkers and it seems pretty common.

Ironically I'd have to say I bruise less now. When I was younger I had bruises all over the place. Then again it was a much more active life too; skiing, skateboarding, Mt. Biking... even my job was physical labor (bike mechanic) so I was always bumping and jamming things.

Well after some googling it seems this is common.

homerboy - true, but what I'm talking about in my younger years would just be a knot and not a bruise. Now a bruise is sure to follow.

Yeah I know, but I have to say that I think I bruise less now even with an equivalent "bump" I still play basketball, do physical labor around the house and certainly take my lumps while playing with the kids, and I cant think of the last time I got a solid bruise on my body.

That being said, I do know its supposed to be more common (think of the elderly, they get a bruise if they walk up-wind). I just haven't experienced it myself yet.

I haven't noticed it. I'm 37 and crash while mountain biking all the time. The number of bruises I receive has always been about what I'd expect.

hey to fellow mountain bikers. didn't know there were so many of you on the internet. 🙂

i'm 17 and i barely bruise at all. sometimes i can hit something hard as hell and not get a bruise; other times, i'll hit something lightly, almost forget about it, and i'll have a bruise on it the next day. dunno how this translates to older-aged bruising, but i'd say i'll probably bruise more when i get older. it might depend on the person too.

Blood vessels get much more ridgid as you get older and your skin and muscles tend to soften up quite a bit making for a good combination to more prone to bruising.

I think that another component might be that your skin's fat layers get thinner as you age. Perhaps the bruises are just easier to see.

I'm still pretty young, so I still don't bruise much, but I do notice that scars last longer. If I get cut, I'll see the mark for a few weeks, sometimes a couple months. When I was a kid it'd heal over in a week or two.

Yeah, there's that but google says that doesn't really come into play until after 50!

Yeah, I'm not seeing that kind of bruising yet, either (I'm 2 years older than you.) I see it with my parents a lot. Every little bruise ends up deep purple and takes ages to go away.

I'm older, have a fairly low body fat and overall am very healthy (altho don't work out much lately) and am pretty certain I don't bruise more easily. Possible the opposite, but is hard to say because I'm not doing things as physical as I used to either.
