Do you bring up interview travel reimbursement details before the interview?

Dear Summer

I was supposed to have a phone interview but the hiring manager is in another country at the moment (not sure if temporarily or permanently) so they want to do a video conference type interview instead. However, they want me to come into their office which is 5 hours away by car and they never mentioned anything about helping pay for the travel costs. In my email response, I asked them whether they can reimburse me for the bus travel and never heard back. It's a huge time commitment for me to go there and travel back. Do you ask about interview travel reimbursement if not mentioned up front?

"Don't you guys have Skype" would have been similar to my response to a 5hr away video *interview*.

I thought it was a little odd too because a phone interview is also possible from abroad.
But I don't mind visiting the office of the company to see what it's like.

I traveled over 12 hours total for my interview. All they paid for was my hotel I stayed in, no mileage.

Also... Why don't you call the HR rep who you are dealing with? Email is so passive.

Going to guess that you are in Europe somewhere?
Bus travel there doesn't carry the same stigma as it does here.

interview travel reimbursement? ... No.

Uh, it isn't an unreasonable request at all and SHOULD be reimbursed. I was reimbursed hotel, gas, mileage, meals, etc. for driving to an interview in Chicago. Companies may feel they don't have to do that now if they feel it is a "buyer's market," but if the company has that attitude, move along - not worth working for them.

Whatever your expectations for reimbursement are, they need to be articulated prior to the interview.

While I haven't been on the job market lately, when I was, I would never travel long distance without having negotiated reimbursement first.

Whenever an organization wouldn't offer reimbursement, I just thanked them for their time and declined their interview. If they asked, I just explained that I would rather spend my time with organizations that were committed enough to the hiring process to offer reimbursement...

Best of luck,
Uno

Depends, how good is your resume? Are you applying cold or did they seek you out? My experience is the top applicants get reimbursed, but the rest of us just have to eek it out.

I'm applying to jobs across the country right now, and for the ones that are further away I'm using the bullshit "I'm going to be in the area anyway for *insert self-promoting bullshit*, and was wondering...". I figure that's the only way I'll compete with more local hires. If I get an interview from a company I REALLY want I'll figure out the rest.

Totally common to reimburse - even for flights.

If they are stingy in this dept. I wouldn't have any interest in working for them. They should be grateful that you work for them, not the other way around.

I once travelled across the country for an interview. They brought up reimbursements - I didn't even have to. They might think you're local.

In this crappy job market, they are doing you a favour by even giving you the possible chance at getting a job, as they could easily just outsource it instead. Asking for reimbursement would be a huge red flag and could dock your chance of getting the job. Make it known that you had to travel, in case they do give reimbursements by default, but don't directly ask for it.

I would expect to be reimbursed.

I had a company fly me out for what would have been a 4-5 hour drive. They asked if I wanted to drive or fly and either way it was covered. Not sure if it actually saved any time/effort but there you go. They ended up making an offer so I guess it didn't count against me.

Assuming this is for something even moderately professional I would be surprised there was no mention of it or balking when you ask about it. If a company doesn't hire you because you dared to ask to get money for your time and effort I would expect negotiating a decent salary and working there in general to be less than ideal. Of course if you are currently jobless with little to no experience I guess suck it up.

The job market is not crappy.

Rather than mention the bus as transportation, ask them if you can file an expense reimbursement form while there or do you need to wait until you return home.

Also, you have the issue of getting from bus station to location.
consider a rental vehicle if possible.

Thst way you are tactfully bringing up the issue without forcing it don their throat.

Also as otbers mentioned, just offer to use Skype
