i think string theory is convient to explain some stuff but it hardly can explain everything. i can see why many physicits look down on it.

Well, it works out pretty well. It's plausible. It's neat.

It's just not experimentaly provable right now. I think that even if it's not correct, lots of interesting reasearch will come out of it and it won't be a waste of time.

As for asking if I feel that it's correct? I think that it's certainly a step in the right direction, but get back to me when you actually observe a graviton particle leaving our brane.

You want my opinion on theoretical physics at this time of night Schadenfroh? :Q

Thanks for making me feel even worse that I do for being home & surfing ATOT at this time! :|

I'm at the point where I think of it as something to be considered..... waiting for an experiment that helps determine its validity better. Til then, it's nice, its convenient.

Oh, you are talking about M-Theory, right? The picture of String Theory after Ed Witten's unification?

I don't know (not really). I guess as long as it doesn't interfere with my theory that everything decays and leaves the possibility of a new universe that may or may not contain the information from the previous universe I guess it is possible.

Because your theory has been irrefutably proven, therefore, any theory that does not support it can be immediately discounted.

Not being a physicist myself, and only going on the 4 books I have read about it... Yes.
(Michio Kaku, Beyond Einstein)
(Stephen Hawking, Brief History of Time and The Universe in a Nutshell)
(Briane Green, The Elegant Universe)

Although the 7 additional dimensions seems crazy to us now... not until a few years ago (relative to humans) did we find out that time is just another dimension. There has to be more spacial dimensions...

i've read "The Fabric of the Cosmos" & another one on it.
i don't think "belief" is the right word, but the arguments
seem compelling.

Fabric is a good book, but he uses waaaay too many metaphors.

I think it's an interesting theory and nothing more, it's really hard to say one way or the other how our universe really works. I do believe that there is a unified theory to explain everything though.

I don't hold theories as an article of faith, so I do not "believe" in them. They remain plasible until they are disproven (within reason of course).

Yep... I managed to read through The Elegant Universe, and a lot of what is said makes sense. I would love to see it proven, somehow.

I've only read one book, "The Elegant Universe", about the string theory and I guess that this is the one that sounds the most believable to me, so yes, I do believe it.
