Do you believe in self fulfilling prophecies?

I'm wondering how accurate they are, they seem plausible but at the same time I think they're kind bull. Not really sure what to believe, but basically some 'experts' claim that stereo types and other such things cause individuals to conform to those ideals.

yes, there are many examples. For example if alot of stock analysits say a stock will go down then it likel will since people will sell their shares before the percieved loss in value which will of course result in the loss of value. Same is true for oil prices, if people THINK they will go up then often they will since the fear of rising costs will cause the price to rise. A good example of this is the recent rise in oil prices which has no relationship to the actual supply-demand reality. Recently however prices have began to drop to more reasonable levels.

It's like from that other thread - if you think an attractive girl is out of your league, then she is. It's basically about the limitations we put on ourselves, things that you say in your head that become true because they're what you believe. Think of the saying, "You can do anything you put your mind to" - if you think you can't do something, then you don't, and it doesn't happen, thus the self-fufilling prophecy.

Well, yes.. but not in the way that some might think.

To me, it just means.. If you have something on your mind, a goal.. you're much more likely to reach that goal.

Obviously.

In my opinion, astological signs are accurate to a point, I believe the ones that aren't like "daily, weekly, monthly, yearly" horoscopes have something to offer. When reading about those particular horoscopes I see how I match up with the characterisitcs that are pointed out, some people argue that they're so vague it can apply to anyone but I'd say that only applies to things like daily horoscopes. People say that because I read this that I'm self fulfilling this prophecy because of what I read.

What about the Myers-Briggs personality test? I'm sure this is a fairly respected test, do you believe in the results from these tests as true reflection? Or is it that these results and basically anything you "read" about your self are self fulfilling?

If there is one thing I can say about the test is that one aspect of the test that changes after taking it multiple times is whether or not I'm introverted or extroverted.

Completely. I can easily see a big one happening with christianity today.

All kinds of hype about how christians will be persecuted in the end times. So christians get all defensive and self-righteous, causing the rest of us to loathe and detest christians, causing them to lash out, causing us to persecute them - prophecy fulfilled.
