Do you assume that Walmart has the cheapest nonsale prices for common items?

walmart beats down the suppliers till they take it up.... and they sell you some cheap stuff you notice or are looking for and give it to you on the stuff you aren't as price concious about.

Word up. I used to go to Walmart occasionally when I was doing a lot of target shooting - their ammo prices are very good - but generally I find the stores and the people in them kinda gross. As it happens I live on Target's home turf - they have stores all over the place here - and I prefer their stores in every way, so no Walmart for me!

Walmart has one item in each department which is heavily discounted. Other prices may be good or can be higher than other vendors in town. It was explained very well in a Frontline documentary. I think it's called, "Is Walmart good for America?" Netflix has it. It was credible and interesting.

I don't assume they have the cheapest prices, but in many cases they do on grocery items. The cereal my husband likes is regularly $3.79 at the grocery store, $2.58 at Walmart. The V-8 product he drinks is $3.29 versus $1.98 at Walmart. Cheese sticks $3.49 vs $2.50. Already cooked bacon $3.79 vs $2.50. I just hate grocery shopping at Walmart, though, so I try to get all the products at the same time about once a month and watch for sales elsewhere that would make the stuff cheaper than the Walmart price.

The local Wal-Mart had cheaper prices for about a month after they opened, then increased their prices over and above other local retailers. At least with all of the items I typically shop for.

Every week the department managers at Wal-Mart sift through other stores' circulars and mark down their own merchandise to match/beat the other stores' prices. It has to be the same brand/size as the other stores' product.

As others have said, for "non-sale" grocery items, I save an easy $30-$40 per trip going to Walmart vs. the other major chains.
The only thing I don't get at Walmart is stuff from the meat counter. I hit up local butchers or a different grocery store for that.
Otherwise, Wally World is the cheapest for most things.

I find tha target is better for overall shopping. Prices are just as good, selection is a bit nicer, and the generics that target sells for stupendously cheap, are actually of a very decent quality.
Only reason I go to the supermarket is for fruits, veggies and meat.

Very true. The "Archer Farms" brands at target are very nice products for the money. The pizzas, frozen meals, and other pre-packaged items are of some of the best quality that I've had from an off-lable. Very reasonably priced too.
Target is nice too in that they cary some more special/premium labels on things than other stores. You can pick up sauces, salsas and coffees there that you can't find in other places.
Too bad I don't have a Super Target to shop at any more

Basically it's a service (costs like a buck a week) that tracks sale trends at grocery store chains and the coupons that are in the Sunday paper and tells you when to stock up on items. My wife and I used to do it - it takes a little bit of effort but you get some amazing deals. We stopped doing it because we don't spend a lot on groceries and we get a lot of our stuff at Costco. We also buy a lot of generics.
