Do you answer your phone at work if you don't know who's calling?

I only answer my phone when people I work with call. If I don't recognize the number, I let it roll to voicemail. Does anyone else screen their calls that way?

I understand those in headset land may not have a choice... :(

at work I usually answer the phone before even looking at who's calling.

at home, I don't answer unless I recognize the number.

At work, yes, I will answer. Mostly, because I get so few calls, it has to be important for my phone to ring.

On my cell phone, nope. If I don't know the number or am expecting a call, I let it go to voicemail.

My work phone is my cell phone, so regardless, I pretty much have to answer. Never know whom it might be, and I don't want to get shit rained on me for not answering.

So if I don't recognize the number, I usually just answer "This is <Name>"

Work phone- yes. If it's somebody I don't wish to speak with, I tell them I am busy and will call back.

Cell phone- I almost never answer calls from people that my phone doesn't already have in my contact list. I let it go to VM and listen to see if it's important.

Yes I do that too. My desk phone shows the caller ID and if it's a client I know or a # I recognize, I'll pick up. If it shows something like Sipserver#, then I ignore b/c I know it's a recruiter. If it's a number I just don't recognize, I'll google it to see if it's telemarketing spam and let it go to VM. If it turns out to actually be someone work related, I'll call back of course.

I had my ringer successfully turned off for over a year. Then the finance manager found out and I had to turn it back on...for a day.

Email me or come see me. Phones are obsolete.

in the noc, it's part of the job. hard to tell who's calling when the area covers 5 states. only time I bounce a call is if it's less than 10 minutes to the end of my shift and the next shift is already logged in.

So true...the new iPhone sold like 5 total, then Apple stock immediately crashed.

I no longer have a cell phone.

Tablet with Google Hangouts. I take maybe 2 calls a week. Otherwise its just texting or email.

I never answer any phone unless I recognize the number (sometimes not even then if I am busy with something). If it's important they can leave a message or e-mail me; preferably the latter because voicemail is annoying.

I don't answer phones. I have underlings screen my calls
I do this too, but I still have a direct number that vendors get a hold of. Occasionally fax machines will call my line (human error). In both cases, I don't touch my phone if the number isn't coming from the underlings or another person in my department.

The first thing I did when I started this job was setup a department chat server....so chat & email typically are the way I communicate.

Ah ok, I don't have a direct incoming line so it's impossible for anyone to bypass my secretary.

Just had a call today. I apologized for my phone ringing & turned it off. Later, I looked up the number. Rent-a-center??? Turns out someone gave them my number as a reference. Someone knew that I was an upstanding citizen with a respected job and can give a good reference. Unfortunately, that someone assumed that I would give a good reference for someone I don't know.

No. That is what VM is for. I constantly get called by companies wanting to sell me shit or send me white papers or ask about my DR bla bla bla. You can't get a word in to tell them to STFU, you're not interested. So... no.

Yup. My phone number isn't public, so if someone's calling me directly there's a reason.

I don't answer the landline at work cause it isn't for me, and all I'll do is take a message. That's what machines are for. If my cell rings, and the number isn't in my contacts, it can go to voicemail if important.
