Do you agree with my friend's observations?

This is from another board I visit.

"Something interesting things I've observed in the last few months in my office.

Observation 1: Support functions verses business functions.

My building has 24 floors. There are two elevator banks, one serving floors 2-13 and the other serving 13-24. The banks are on either side of the escalator which brings people from the ground floor to the lobby. The escalator is very narrow and does not allow you to walk up it if someone is standing.

The floors of our building are arranged so that floors 2-13 are support functions (accounting, graphics, purchasing, AR/AP, etc.) The upper 13 floors are the business units (Glad, Kingsford, Clorox, Armor All, etc.).

For the last few months, I've kept track of whether or not people walk up the escalator in the morning or ride it. My theory is that people in support functions are less connected to the businesses and, therefore, don't conduct daily business at the same "pace" as the rest of us. I've felt this for years and the elevator test suppported this.

Of the last 31 people who rode the escalator instead of walking up it, 29 of them went to the 2-13 elevator bank (the support area of the building) after getting off the escalator. Only two went to the 13-24 bank. Conclusion: people who work in support functions are slower and lazier than the people who are being supported.

Observation 2: Women verses Men.

Our building has a stairwell in each corner and an elevator bank in the center. The elevators are very crowded due to the fact that our building is at maximum capacity and we only run 2/3 of the elevators in order to help California with the energy situation (whatever).

I've worked in this building for 3 1/2 years. At least once per day, someone gets on the elevator and takes it one floor up or down. Obviously it's much faster to take the stairs than it is to ride an elevator one floor, even if the elevator arrives immediately. It also delays everyone else who's riding further.

In those 3 1/2 years, based on my estimation, I've seen about 1000 people take the elevator one floor up or down. Of those 1000, ZERO have been men.

Conclusion: Women are significantly lazier than men."

You're lazier than all of them... because instead of doing your job, you sit there and count people on escalators and elevators.

Hmmm, welll when we lived in a apartment, my sisters hated taking the stairs, while I use it most of the time.

Ditto. Usually I see old people do that and I really don't care, but for everyone else that doesn't have an excuse (carrying heavy stuff, etc...) I make sure to give an evil eye. :|

And of those 1000 men taking the stairs, how many of them wore high heels?

Exactly.

Lazier? Or just aren't into S&M? ;)

All this time I believed that there weren't any 13th floors in any buildings. Must be an old wives tale I heard when I was a kid, because your building has a 13th floor.

Actually, the support people are so quick and efficient in performing their work they can afford to have a leisurely ride up the escalator; while the business people are so interminably lazy and wasteful of their time in the office they are forever running up the escalators to catch up on the hours they've frittered away.

:D

I think this is true for a lot of hotels, but a lot of office buildings I've been in have a 13th floor.

You've got some serious flaws in your observation method and subsequent conclusion. You need to state how many people went up the escalator in total. Suppose 62 peoplee went up the elevator and of the 62 people, 31 rode the elevator. of those that rode the elevator, 29 of them went to the 2-13 elevator bank (the support area of the building) after getting off the escalator. Only two went to the 13-24 bank. Just like you said.

Now of the other 31 who walked up the elevator, 29 of them went to the 2-13 elevator bank (the support area of the building) after getting off the escalator. Only two went to the 13-24 bank. Hmm....now it seems the support people are less lazy than those being supported.

What conclusion can you make from this? There were more people in support than people being supported while you were counting. Thats about it.

when people in my dorm use the elevator to go to the third floor (many people live on the 16 and 17th floor) we boo them and some people throw trash onto their floor. Needless to say, we do not like lazy people.

If you did this study around opening time, or at a time when people were returning to work from their break, there's an obvious alternate explanation for the escalator thing. People going to floors 1-13 were almost at work and didn't see the need to run, while people on the upper floors had further to go and needed to run to be sure to make it on time.

That's just one alternate explanation, there are many others, any of which could be the right one or a combination thereof. You haven't taken out the variables, so you can't isolate any reason for your observations, even if we take for granted that your sample set is large enough.

Too much time on your hands, get back to work.
