office depot instated a policy like this shortly after i left. i made a killing buying clearance items and selling therm on ebay. we would get the price change lists for the next day at like 7pm the night before and put all the clearance on hold. good times.

Now that's a conflict of interest.

But a guy buying from a factory outlet store is a different matter.
 
seanws got it right there. The company wants to make sure that the customer has an equal chance of getting the item as anyone else. If you were to put it on one side, they don't benefit. They may lose a customer. You on the other hand, would be someone they expect to shop there, because you'd have your employee discount.

I'd say, go ahead. Who are they to limit what you buy? And if they ask, say you are buying presents, or buying to give to the poor kids, that always works 😛 Also, use your employee discount! More profit that way.
