because the default IM window is too god damn big in trillian, so i set mine to where i want it and then resize everyone elses to it
 
Yes, so that I can see what my status looks like to others. Sometimes I want to be "away" when I'm not and also to see my online time. Back in the day, we use to see who could stay online the longest without restarting or getting logged off AIM. 😉

I do, with it's own little section called "Online/Idle Time".

I simply want to know how long I've been on, as sometimes I forget and leave myself logged on at work or at home when I don't intend to. A quick glance at this lets me know that if I've been online 8 hours and just logged then then it's probably safe to boot myself from the at home instance.

Sort of a safety precaution I suppose.

Yup. I have many accounts for AIM, MSN, and ICQ for work and personal use, and for separating people I know by account. It is useful to know if I am invisible.

Neg. The title wasn't very well thought out. I don't care about the idle time, just the online time. Online 8 hours when I get into work in the AM = sure sign I forgot to log off at home. Lets me terminate the bonus session.

Usually (though not always) I have the idle disabled entirely.

certian cliants have settings that make it so that does not happen
 
Yes. I signed on with a phone one time and it never logged out. Even though AIM was closed on the phone it still showed me online. People would talk to me and they would get forwarded in text messages. This was about 3 years ago and I'm still signed on to this day. I had to go on and block everyone so they couldn't IM me, and create a new SN.
