Do xeons need ECC memory or is it optional?

assuming the rules have not changed, it is optional but recommended if you have more than 2 ram sticks per memory channel. Using ECC could get upto 4 ram sticks per channel on older boards, but the same board could become unstable / need lower clocks when using normal ram.

you can drop it into a consumer 1155 mobo using non-ECC memory

or a server xeon mobo using ECC mem... if you're planning to use 8GB DIMMs, looks like ECC is cheaper
