I recently opened a new account due to problems with my old Bank (Credit Union). The Account I opened gives you a limit of the number of checks you can write and a debit card. This encourages us to use the debit card. It is quite convenient and a lot more accepted these days. Ours can be used as both a debit card and as a credit card, as long as you have money in the Bank.
The difference is as a credit card you sign a slip and as a debit card you enter a pin.
I find it quite convenient at the pump and when in too much a hurry to actually go to the bank.
the women i see using checks are usually stay at home moms that are grocery shopping with 20 kids with her at 10:30 in the morning on a tuesday. They write checks because they have all the time in the world i guess. Why not use a debit card?
I've noticed the same thing after working at Best Buy for three years.
Typically, young women (25 and under) will almost always pay with credit/debit card and soemtimes cash. Middle-aged women is about 50/50 for credit card/check use. Elderly women will always pay with check, period.
I think that part of the reason men don't pay with checks is because they don't fit into a wallet as easily as cash and credit cards do, and that they're smart enough to realize that debit cards are faster to use anyway.
What really pisses me off is when I'm in line at the grocery store and someone is writing a check to cover their $9.00 sale. Just use cash, damnit!!
i only use checks for paying bills (rent, water, gas & electric, cable, dmv registration, insurance). in fact, im still on my first box of checks from when i first started my checking account years ago. but i go to the grocery store and sure enough, there's grandma moses digging out coupons and cutting a check for something that totals up to $8.67.
i write about 1 check a month. I hate waiting in line at the store behind some old bat writing out a check. Just use a debit card, its the same thing and a whole lot faster...
I pretty much only use checks to pay bills. I don't remember the last time my checkbook was more than 10 feet away from the box my statements are kept in.

The only time I use checks is from my home to pay bills via the mail, and thats only for the rare occasions when I can't pay for something online.
hehe...I still have my original box of checks for my checking account (5 books still untouched). I hate writing checks. It's pretty good considering I've had the account close to 10 years. I have to manually scribble out the "19__" preprinted on the check so I can put the correct year .
