I always thought I noticed a trend of women using their checkbooks all the time while men tend to use there debit card or cash. My girlfriend, who is a cashier, says she sees equal check usage among the genders.

Am I wrong? Do I have a fetish for watching women write checks?

Freakin' people think it makes them seem important to write a check for <$10. It makes them old fashioned and inconsiderate.

The only time checks are acceptable is for charity publicity purposes. Handing someone a giant credit card looks sort of funny.

I would say women probably use them more than men, because women have a convenient place to carry theirs. That, and I remember my mom paying for groceries with her checkbook all the time when I was a kid, my dad only used his to pay bills. I finally got her to start using a debit card.

I weened my parents off of their checkbook. I'm so proud of them. They're even using online banking now!

You're also young.

My bank's name changed 3 times (mergers) before they finally changed my account number and I had to get new checks. I'd used maybe 20 out of my first box of checks, I was pissed that I had to buy more. I tried using one of my deposit slips at the second bank that bought my bank and they wouldn't let me because it had the old bank's name on it... wtf, it still has all the magenetic numbers on the bottom, who cares?

Well every time I'm at the grocery store in the check out line and someone whips out their check book, it has always been a old/er woman.

The only time I use checks is from my home to pay bills via the mail, and thats only for the rare occasions when I can't pay for something online.

oh, and yesterday, i went to the grocery store, and this stupid woman in front of me held up an entire "express" lane because she decided to pay for her entire purchase (except for $1) in change: quarters, nickels, dimes, pennies, nothing larger. she held up the line to find the money in her change purse, and then, when she left, the cashier had to sort the money in the cash register so it took quite some time. so much for an express lane living up to its expectations.

after i told my husband this story, he said it would have been great if i videotaped it and posted it on ATOT. sorry, i didn't think about using my treo videocam until AFTER the fact. :(

i guess that's true. but the address dated on my checks is about as old as i am. :p

growing up in a technological age, and being more technology adept than female counterparts, i guess, puts me in a different category altogether. i still get a lot of PMs and messages from ATOT users still baffled at the fact that i am female and really computer literate compared to many others. (how many female network engineers do YOU know?) :p

Working in retail as a much despised photoguy/cashier for about 4 years, I experienced the women use the checkbook more often than men phenomenon. I don't know why, but for some reason they just do. After awhile I began to associate checks with femininity and looked down on any man who would pay for checks. Same thing goes for guys who buy Marlboro Mediums.

i wrote a pretty scathing post here, but thought better of it, and have shortened it considerably:

Ya, there was an episode on seinfeld on that. "Women have their checkbook very accessible. Its like a weapon for them. They draw it and ask 'whom do I make it out to?'"

I don't write checks for anything but bills. Why would you? It's faster to sign a checkcard slip, you don't have to buy checks, you get the exact same effect on your account and you don't have to carry around a checkbook.

Only time I'd ever consider using a check is for something like a delivered pizza when I have no cash, if I'm at a restaurant and we don't want to wait around for the waitress that forgot about us, etc. I'd like to see checks phased out of existence in 10 years, personally. Once electronic transfer for paying bills becomes more mainstream, they have no reason to exist.

Oh yeah, I'm male, and I see more women writing checks than men in my area of work.

I work as a bank teller, and predominantly old people use checks for purposes checks aren't really intended for (personal withdrawals, transfers)
However, if a young person comes in and uses a check for those reasons, 99% of the time it's a woman.

I hardly write checks, everything gets charged now because I get at least 1% on all purchases and then pay using my linked checking account.
