Do wireless mice still suck?

Last time I used a wireless mouse was a Microsoft one probably around 2003. It was godawful with terrible lag. I tried it in a few games and it couldn't aim properly with it spinning, etc. Thinking I bought a broken one, I got another one and it also sucked.

Shortly thereafter, I tossed it in the garbage.

So, do modern Bluetooth wireless mice still suck? Could I use one reasonably well in something like Quake Live?

I use a Microsoft Sidewinder X8 and like it.
- It has a detachable cord for charging with a magnetic clip that retracts into a spool when not in use.
- The BlueTrack technology really does work on just about any surface.
- On the fly DPI switching is pretty useful in shooters once you get used to it.
- No perceptible lag whether connected or not.

I also liked the G18, so I'd recommend giving either a try. A lot of the opinions on these two mice seem to be based on individual comfort. I have large hands and find the X8 very comfortable to use for long periods of time.

If you didn't like the 2003 lag, you won't like today lag.
Wireless seems to have maxed at mx700 level, ive used/had a dozen logitech wireless over the years. The lag never gets better, it only improved between the 40hz era pre mx700, after that it hit a brick wall. Get a wired logitech or whatever, 500-1000hz refresh etc, its always subtly smoother. If you fps, forget wireless, you can get by with them now, but like the difference between 40 and 100fps, you feel its not quite as good.

Wireless mouse should not be used for gaming.

Anyhow, I have a BT mouse works well, only thing that sucks is batteries. I have gone through 2 sets in like 4 months. And it takes 2 triple A lol

I got a Logitech G7 in 2006 and it's still great. Imo wireless is the way to go. I can't stand cords.

I've played a lot of fast paced FPS games with it and competitive WoW arena and I've been very successful. No lag what-so-ever.

If I got a new rig today I'd probably get the Razer Mamba.

get a g9 or something.
theres no need to only have one mouse anymore actually, logitechs new setpoint 6 handles multiple mice without freaking out now..so its all good.

I have the X8 too. Although its attached to the cable most of the time even when I do make it wireless theres no lag I can tell and I play a lot of games.

I never got the point of wireless kb/mouse for desktop use. You have to worry about batteries, and lag for something that'll always be a cord-length away from your computer.

If you have an HTPC, then it's useful.

simple google search 🙂 or possibly an amazon search, would have gotten you the G7. awesome wireless mouse. I have one, and have boughten one for my gf. Work very very well.

I don't feel like there is any lag to my VX revolution, but my friend swears up and down that he can detect it.

ya i saw mx1100 on sale for 32 bux some people say its awesome for fps others say laggy. guess only one way to find out. I use only G9 on every one my pc's (yes all 10 have g9 =P)

prepare for disappoint.
no wireless mouse seems to be able to up the polling rate beyond usb standard 125hz or whatever.

i guess your right, the very highest end seem to be selectively higher polling, at the cost of battery life or something. but most mice which advertise any decent length of battery life still seem to be 125hz

Many wireless mice go to low power mode after a period of inactivity, so you have to move it around a bit before it wakes up again, which is not cool for gaming. But this saves battery life...so...you have to lose some to get some hehe.

whats good? an mx revolution? mx 1100? they are 125hz, and cost 50+ when new. they certainly feel less sure than my g9

Every time there's an argument about wired and wireless, I always tell people to buy this

Best purchase I've ever made. I bought one about 6 years ago for $10 and im still using it today. I forget that Im even using a wired mouse. Used it from my MX510 to MX518 to my Steelseries Xai today.

big one on edge of desk, thread wire through, it keeps enough friction to keep slack on the table and prevent cord slip😛
fiddy cent solution

I don't like wireless mice less because of lag and more because I get irritated with having to worry about batteries.

But are there no hybrid mice? Why can't they make a wireless mouse with a USB lead that can be plugged in to it or removed according to taste, and which will recharge the battery while its plugged in even while you are using it in wired mode?

That would get round my objection, that you can't use it while its recharging (ones that need a USB powered cradle to charge are particularly stupid, as when I'm not using the mouse the computer is unplugged and hence the cradle has no power). And people concerned about lag could use it in wired mode for games where it mattered, wireless the rest of the time.

Again, the Razer Mamba. It's wired/wireless.
