Even crazier was the New Orleans Police Department (the ones that didn't steal caddies and cowardly flee the city) were confiscating any and all guns from law abiding citizens when they needed them the most. Luckily I live in Jefferson Parish and while our PD has it's own issues they were happy to see armed men at both entrances to our neighborhood the one time they drove by in over two weeks. It was one less area they had to really worry about.

I guarantee that every last one of these anti-gun folk would change their attitude in a heartbeat had they been by my side during the chaos. It would have only made things worse if everyone was unarmed because the badguys roam like a pack of wolves. I can't beat a pack of wolves hand to hand but I can damn sure make it not worth the cost of entry with my 12 gauge and my .40 cal.

I was there. Being visibly armed all by itself deterred people who intended me harm from even approaching me. Hell out of all the incidents I only had to raise my gun once and the moment I did that the two assholes went scurrying. I consider that the greatest outcome possible, no one hurt, no one dead, no one robbed or beaten, etc..

But it doesn't go in the stats so according to a few in this thread my gun is a bigger threat to me than all the badguys I encountered who intended to do me harm. I respectfully and wholeheartedly disagree and although I was prepared to I never once had to pull the trigger to get the desired effect. As far as I am concerned my guns have saved far more lives than they have taken.

I don't think non-American first worlders really understand this. Look at how Japan reacted to the tsunami. They were orderly, helped each other and didn't rob or loot. Now look at how Haiti reacted to their most recent earthquake. Robbing, murdering, looting and raping that was only suppressed by armed private security and U.S. Army Paratroopers.

My point is, America has more Haitians than it has Japanese.

America has established gangs of all types roaming around doing things on a daily basis, even not in a disaster situation.

When one happens they will run around like wolf packs.

Japan is more homogeneous, it has evolved from being from being a bit more isolated and having to deal with a society there that lives in close quarters socially on a daily basis I'm sure, even though they have their variants.

Lt. Gen. P.K. Keen, deputy commander of US Southern Command, however, announced that despite the stories of looting and violence, there was less violent crime in Port-au-Prince after the earthquake than before.[99]

In many neighbourhoods, singing could be heard through the night and groups of men coordinated to act as security as groups of women attempted to take care of food and hygiene necessities.[100] During the days following the earthquake, hundreds were seen marching through the streets in peaceful processions, singing and clapping

Wouldn't surprise me a bit.

I did not look into that one, but of course when a disaster occurs someone is going to blow some things out of proportion for headlines.

Yep. I remember an earthquake that tumbled down the walls of a Japanese prison. Not a single inmate tried to escape even though there were no intact walls. Japan is a monumentally poor society to compare to America, a nation founded by people escaping almost every nation in the world. They ain't like us.

I wish I still had all of my guns. Every time I get one I always seem to lose them in tragic boating accidents.

Japan after becoming a modern society decided they needed to Take over Korea by force as a colony. They raped their women used men as slave labor, took their farmland, chopped down the trees, overfished their waters, and tried to destroy the Korean civilization and turn it into part of Japan by burning books and setting up Japanese schools.

Japan is definitely different than us.

During World War II Japan tried to invade Pearl Harbor.

They used slave labor to build bridges, roads, railroads, etc.

They attacked all their neighbors like China, Hong Kong, all the Islands near China, etc.

We get it, we get it, they're great warriors & imperialists AND have great domestic tendencies.

From Charlton Heston on the LA Riots, when any number of Hollywood morons asked to borrow his guns:

“Umm, Chuck, you have quite a few … ah, guns, don’t you?”

“Yes, I do.”

“Shotguns and … like that?”

“Indeed.”

“Could you lend me one for a day or so? I tried to buy one, but they have this waiting period … ”

“Yeah, I know; I remember you voted for that. Do you know how to use a shotgun?”

“No, I thought maybe you could teach me. This is getting a little scary.”

“I noticed. I could teach you, but not in an hour. You might shoot yourself instead of the bad guys. The Marines are coming up from Pendleton; that’ll end it. When it does, go buy yourself a good shotgun and take some lessons. It doesn’t get so scary then.”

Heston said his friend writer-director John Milius had more calls. His answer was more forthright: “Sorry. They’re all being used.”

Yes, but that was before we dropped atomic bombs on they heads. Nothing like the power of fission to show one the true value of peacefulness.

When the police are 2 days away.

There's a number of photos of Korean shop owners defending their stores from rooftops, while they're armed to the teeth. They did a pretty good job of saving their stores, too.

Conversely, some Marines were put under the command of the police. The police were responding to a call, took fire and commanded the marines to "cover them"....cover means a different thing to soldiers, and the marines dumped in excess of 200 rounds into a building, IIRC.

To a proggie, everyone not spouting the party line is apparently indistinguishable. :D

I guess so...I'd be hard pressed to confuse Heston with Eastwood, though...
