Do we know when the RadeonII will be available?

ACK ACK ACK!

Ok...I didn't like my Kyro2...so I returned it. Not that happy with the performance for $200 (canadian).

So I come home and put my V5-5500 back in and it won't work!
ACK!

Now I'm running a TNT2m64 🙁🙁🙁🙁

I liked the Radeon Vivo for it's DVD playing capabilities...but I'd like to buy a card with programmble T&L...so I'm looking for a Radeon2 w/ TV-out. Any idea when the Radeon 2 will be available?

Ahhh I did at first....

But I started to realize it wasn't all that much better than my Voodoo5.
And then I did some benchmarking...the numbers weren't *that* much higher than my V5, and it didn't feel any faster. Nor did it seem to have any extra useful features.

And it cost me $200+...it's a great card if you are looking for an upgrade to a V3 or TNT2, but not really from a V5.

Besides...I need the $$$. And I want to buy a card with programmable T&L so I can play Doom3 and Max Payne.

Radeon II should be sampling soon with an expected release of September/October. Of course this could change.

The games you mention aren't even out yet. By then, new cards will be out. If you need the $$$ as you say, why not wait until the games (that use the features of a card) are released before buying it? Currently Max Payne is due for release late August.
Doom 3 won't be out til mid to late 2002. Two or three generations of video cards will have been released by then. Do you want to spend close to $1000 between now and then upgrading just your video card?

Be smart - save your money until the games that utilize these neat DirectX 8 features come out, prices on the video cards come down, and games put T&L to good use.

Oohh..I thought Doom3 was this Xmas....

That's why I'm looking at the Fall round of cards.

Mabye I should just go with a Radeon now...I can get those quite cheaply...and it would be plenty good for Rune, Q3 and CS.

The Radeon LE is a mere $68 on Pricewatch right now, and it's but a BIOS flash away from being a regular Radeon 32mb DDR (I was suckered into paying $125 for mine before everyone found out the LE stuff. I still like it though). You can't beat that price (especially considering you can sell your current card in FS/T and get half the cash you need for the Radeon).

I'd say around october or so it'll be hitting store shelves, if ATI is giving samples around August, probably two months for the 3rd party board makers to make their boards and work out the flaws...
I want Radeon 2, i'm running a S3ViRGE which snows at 1024x768 even when underclocked...

The Radeon VE has that chip I think (it's only $75 but has cripplied performance. You do get a DVI connector too though . . .). All the LE's I've seen though have no TV out (they might be out there though).

The Radeon 64 Mb VIVO DDR come with the Rage Theatre chip for T.V. out but the 32 MB DDR and the LE do not.

Wow, I tip my hat to anyone still using an S3Virge...

Since I've become quite the tight-wad with any kind of upgrades, I take the approach that I will continue to use my existing hardware until there is software I want to use that runs slow on my current setup. That is when I know it is time for an upgrade.

All the next-gen FPS are due for release end of the year through the first quarter of 2002. Since my machine is only a P2-450 with an ATI AIW Radeon, it will suffice (it'll have to!) until next year when everything will be upgraded. It plays/played Soldier of Fortune, UT, System Shock 2 and Deus Ex sufficiently. Maybe not max settings, but enough to pull me into the games without getting upset over any major slowdowns.

If you can manage to wait, you'll save yourself a ton of money - just think what cpus and video cards were going for 3-6 months ago! If you can, skip a generation for the video card. I've noticed my upgrades go in increments of ~4x; for example, ram going from 32 to 128, cpu speed from 133 to 450 (of course my next upgrade will be 2gig or more).

Thanks for reading my ramble/rant 🙂

Now might be a good time to find some older software (abandonware) or enjoy some old school emulator gaming while the prices drop and the newer software comes out.

noriaki, u're one of those people who anticipates an upgrade and starts considering options 4 months before u actually upgrade...non?

ha.

ah, anyway, no surprise that u didn't receive a huge performance advantage going from a v5500 to a kyro II...

i used to get impatient about technology and possible upgrades...used to...now i just wait until about a week before i'm gonan upgrade to investigate the options...

i belive the radeon II is scheduled for early Q4.

Used to be...I stopped that....costs to much money.

Now with the exception of a crazy good deal I don't buy more than what I need at the moment.

But this TNT2m64 is killing me....I'm trying to decide if I should grab a Radeon Vivo now or try and tough it out for the RadeonII....

I can't play Quake3 or Rune with an M64...if it was a Regular TNT2 I'd be ok...but that cut in memory bandwidth...

I can't even get 50fps in 800x600x16 🙁
