Do we know the future direction of computer/monitor interface yet?

Haven't been following much lately, but with DVI/HDMI, DisplayPort and Thunderbolt, is there a general consensus on where the industry is headed? Is Thunderbolt going to render DisplayPort obsolete before DP becomes mainstream, or is TB going to be another Firewire? Or is all this still up in the air?

What future?

1080p is here to stay. DVI will continue to be standard for a while.

Anything else will be high end boutique for several years. DP and Thunderbolt use the same connector and a thunderbolt port can be used as a displayport (but not vice versa). So there is no real worry about something overtaking DP, but there's no real need for DP unless we start seeing mainstream resolutions increasing or higher resolution 120Hz catching on (e.g. getting a LOT cheaper)

Whatever happened to that new royalty-free standard that would use Cat5e to transmit video data? Sounded promising to me.

Displayport and HDMI probably

This. The display connections I use are DP, HDMI and DVI. A 6-foot DVI cable weighs a lot more than necessary in 2011, and my two DP cables can be strung behind monitor mounts. Thunderbolt/Net/USB over DP is truly awesome, if you can live with Macs... I can't.
