do we just expect politicians to lie?

There are honest politicians. But they don't get elected. The sad truth is that people say they want honest politicians, but if someone comes out and admits to having faults, the public chastises it as weakness and votes for someone who insists s/he is immaculate. It's preposterous, but it's how politics works in our "sound bit" driven world.

all wet hey you might need a raincoat
shakedown dreams walking in broad daylight
three hundred sixty five degrees
burning down the house

I wouldn't say they all 'lie'... but they most definitely tend to bend the truth a little bit, exaggerate some things, or kind of put up blinders and hide the truth from common site, often with words that 'inspire'.

Let me put it this way: I don't think they can, or should, always tell us the full truth about everything. But if they are caught lying about seemingly inconsequential things where telling the truth shouldn't hurt, I think it speaks volumes about their motivations to lie.

Dude, take a polly science class. Its amazing. The upper level stuff is scary. They are taught in this manner. It's disturbing.

Go to the politics board and you will see numerous people who think their side are looking out for their best interests!

It's not that they lie, many just misinform or exaggerate, others like to hide and obscure the truth by shifting words and blame. Could be for a variety of reasons, but if you're looking for a reason it's because they want to appease us by telling us what we want to hear even if it's the exact opposite of what they plan to do.

There is an old axiom which, as far as I have been alive, has never been violated: Those who seek positions of power and control are inherently least well suited to wield it.

So, to answer your question, yes, we expect them to lie, cheat, and generally abuse whatever power we give them. It's a given.

did you just take my post and change some words and add a little bit of your flavor? It's got a different characteristic, kind of like sweet and salty Chex.. tough to pinpoint exactly, it all kind of meshes and just confuses the nerves. Help?

It's why congress currently sucks, and everyone just points the finger at Bush when in reality Congress is a bunch of fail and seems to wield the most power in the government as of today.

Politicians promise things that anyone familliar with goverment can attest are impossible because they require majority consent.

Our problems are not our politicians, but ourselves. Politicial only represent us and our interests. It is us who wishes for the impossible.

Yes, if your take the phrase "poLitIcAl Representative" and remove all of the unnecessary letters it becomes self-evident.
