Yeah, I'd say GPS for sure....$1000 device can save them millions in increased deliveries.

I lean towards assuming that they just know their zones really really well.... I do know, however, that if mapquest can't find you, neither can they...

No. I used to work as the driver helper for Christmas season. They hire local drivers who know the area very well.

Inside tip: there is no AC in UPS truck, so it is a PITA to work in the summer, especially down south here.

Not true. My new house isn't on mapquest yet but I can still get deliveries from UPS/Fed EX.

The evolution of GPS into the mass market is still relatively new. UPS/FedEx does not rely on the technology to deliver goods. Most drivers are fimiliar with their zone and don't need it anyway.

I know a guy at UPS and he says that the electronic device that you have to sign on also acts as a communication device for them to ask directions on.

That electronic device is called a "DIAD board" and it offers all communication even voice transmissions to the base.
