as long as my monitor is 17" i dont care what i have...all i use it for is gaming and surfing...why would anyone need a super flat .20 20" monitor?
 
Definitely makes a difference. A good monitor is prolly the best investmenet you can make considering you'll keep it for years.
 
what kind? No..don't care...do care about decent looks and size. I have a great old 14" monitor I use to build system and repair. Great colors, clarity etc..but it is crap compared to my 19". The appearance would have to be total crap for me to care. And most of the total crap monitors have gone away. Of course, the person who spent $600 on a 19" in going to swear that it is 5x better, but for my personal use I do not care. Just waiting for the 21"'s...
 
I don't care for text sharpness becuase I only use (800x600x32x85) because I have very poor vision.
But when I upgraded from my 15" to my 17" the colours are sooo sooo sooo much better.

I'd definately want a high quality monitor for colour quality.


As for .20dp it's not really needed....but I like flat becuase there is low glare.
 
Some people don't care but the vast majority (which I'm in) definately care. For example, on my Viewsonic E790 I can run it at 1600x1200 at 75Hz. If that refresh rate were to go any lower I'd go nuts. The other big factor that most people care about is clarity. A $150 17" monitor will be less sharp than a $400 17" monitor.

Besides, if the monitor defects you will want to get it back in a reasonable amount of time, and in working order. Unforunately Viewsonic has been terrible for this for me. I've RMA'd about 6 of the 20 Viewsonic's that I have sold in the last few months and 4 of them had to go back because the replacement or repaired monitor had the same or a different defect.

I hope to god my monitor doesn't fail.
 
ABSOLUTELY.

Monitors are probably the only investment in your system that you can keep for more than 3 or 4 years. Monitor technology hasn't improved by *THAT* much over the last 7 years or so..
 
I definitely care because I want the best resolution, brightness and reliability out of my monitor. That's why I chose the 19" Dell P991 UltraScan (FD Trinitron). My number one complaint though is it's HUGE, one reason I'd love a TFT Display is because it would probably occupy at least half the space my Dell P991 does.

And it's something that I'm always using anytime I use my computer. When I upgraded from a generic 15", I could have just went with a 17" and be happy. But considering I'm gonna use a monitor through several computer upgrades, I might as well get a bigger and better one.

A slightly lower dot pitch or a tiny bit better quality wouldn't make much of a difference too me. The thing I'd want most is a bigger one! 🙂. Oh and and LCD would be nice too if they were identical to CRT's except for the obvious thin.
 
I am happy with my 17"er 1024X768. I wouldn't mind going up to maybe a 19"er later on. but this has served me good enough already and it still works for everything so i don't really mind it. But with a good monitor you can get high resolutions when playing games and this could turn into having good scores, i.e in CS with higher res you got more accuracy in some cases...

But I'm fine with my own setup at the moment so I don't want to invest in anything, or get my parents to get me anything anyway.

I have an EIZO 15 LCD and although I miss having one of those big monitors (19, 21), I wouldn't trade the low radiation (that's the biggest reason my father got me one) the tiny size for a viewing area of almost a 17 (LCD's are real 15 and 1 7CRT are really 16 inch) for a 19 or 21 inch CRT.
 
Eye strain is the #1 factor for me; the best solution would be an LCD (if they were cheaper and were good for gaming). Second best is to have a CRT with an incredibly high refresh rate. I game at 160hz, so that is rock solid. My desktop is at 140hz. I could not live with anything lower. Need that "rock solid look," baby.

The monitor is the key element in your computer system! It's the principal output device in which your eyes are trained to whenever you're using your computer.

BTW, you're old monitor doesn't have to go to waste. Add a cheapo PCI video card and you can have dual monitors running. Sadly, I think they both need to be set at the same resolution, so the old one will still be at 60Hz, but you won't be looking at that one much anyway!

first it has to be at 1024x768..... thats the minimum for monitor(15 and 17's mostly) on a 19" i prefer 1280x1024.... besides that it has to have a somewhat ok picture... but size is the most important... unless of course it's badass 17" vs crappy 19", then i'd choose the 17".
 
A few years ago I thought a 17" was a 17" and a 19" was a 19".

Boy was I wrong. To me now the monitor is probably THE MOST important part of my sytem. After all, its your main interface with your PC, its what you sit and look at for hours on end.

I did plenty of research before I upgraded my "OK" 17" to a top grade 19", which I am still impressed with over a year on from getting it!
 
Yes, definately.

Started with a good Acer14", went to a better Dell 15". Then to a great AST17" (Anyone else remember the AST 7L ?)From there I went to a Viewsonic P775, talk about clarity!! This was the best monitor I have ever owned.. I got the bigger bug and sold the 775 (Sad sad day...) and got a Viewsonic PS790 (Which I currently have.) I like it but the 775 had a clearer picture to me. I do like the 1280x1084 85mhz and 32bit color I have though...

For my eyes if it is slower than 75mhz I see a constant flicker. (I can see the flicker in a flourescent bulb, wierd eh?)

So yes it does make a huge difference to me anyway!

a great monitor was the best computer investment I made. for the price of a good video card. just think about it, you get so much more for your money and it makes such a difference. you gotta be a fool to skimp on the monitor. you don't have to buy a big one, but a quality one.
 
I don't care what kind it is as long as I can get good image quality and a decent referesh rate at the resolutions I use.
