I look at them as a necessary evil. You can pay $10/mo for ATOT if you want; I'll put up with some ads for free access to this and many other great sites.

Or you can install adblock and have the best of both worlds.

They don't really bug me, though, so I don't bother Adblocking or similar. On lower-end machines, though, I use Flashblock because those flash ads can really suck up some CPU cycles.

EDIT: I doubt Anand needs clickthrough revenue, but every little bit helps. I don't feel very guilty not bothering, though -- this is a big site, I'm sure he does fine.

If you click on ads when you don't mean to, you're only helping a very short term side effect. Think about it - if 10 people click on an ad, and only 2 people buy it, is that much different than 2 people clicking on the ad and 2 people purchasing? Let's assume that the other 8 who clicked it just to support the site exited the site they went to as well. At the end of the day, the company advertising on sites will be paying for the increased revenue, and so that doesn't change when you click on an ad or not.

Sure, it might work for a very little period of time, but that's about it.

...and that.

Indeed, advertis-ments have such a negative association that they may make me less inclined to buy that service or product, or from that monger.

Correct. If I want something or need something I will choose to do the research and buy the best product. If you bombard me with advertisements I will refuse to buy your product should I ever have need of one.
