Do those neti pots work?

I've been having really bad nasal congestion for the past 6 weeks for so. I'm so congested that I can't even blow my nose. I have to use multiple treatments of extra strength nasal spray to get my nose clear enough that I can blow it. I'm sure using nasal spray multiple times a day for 6 weeks is bad for me, but I still don't feel like going to a doctor for congestion.

So, my question is: do those neti pots work? Do they work when your congestion is as bad as mine? I'm afraid that I'll pour water in my nose and it will just sit there because it can't get past the congestion.

Why not use saline nasal spray instead of the medicated stuff?

Just do that at least twice a day for a few days and that should help.

I've never used a neti pot though.

I tried the saline spray first and it didn't work too great. It would take me full 2oz bottle and 3 hours to get my congestion cleared up. The medicated stuff can get me cleared up on 6 squirts and 20 minutes.

Also the medicated stuff seems to help keep me a bit more clear for a few hours after I use it. The box says 12 hours and it seems to help for about 6 hours.

For some reason I recall that the medicated stuff increases your overall congestion in a vicious cycle...

I could be wrong...

Yes, they do. Very well, infact.. if you can get used to using it.

I have one. Doesn't really seem to help my situation at all overall. One time I used it, it made things worse. Another time it helped for a few minutes, but nothing beyond that. It's also pretty uncomfortable because of the position of my neck and back and the fact that it seems to pour down my throat about every 4th time.

Ah here it is...

After a few days of using a decongestant nasal spray, your nasal membranes may become tolerant ? or less responsive ? to the effects of the medication. As a result, you may need to use more and more of the medication to control congestion or your congestion may worsen if you stop using the medication (rebound congestion).

Might as well get a neti pot... I just use a teacup and suck saltwater up my nostril but it can be messy...

I was afraid of that, I have been using more and more nasal spray lately.

I'll try the neti pot, and if that doesn't work I guess I'll go to a doctor to get some better decongestants. Unless somebody has a suggestion for some OTC drugs that would be the same as what a doctor would give me.

Yeah, I've just used a little bowl the few times I've done it. No need for specialized equipment. It cleared stuff out pretty well for me, but it sounds like your congestion is worse than mine was.

Just be aware that with the neti pot, it might take 8-12 hours to notice the effects. It's really just a method to flush all the nasty crap out and help your body heal more quickly. Don't expect miracles the first time you use it.

So its not going to flush out all the mucous clogging up my sinuses?

Yes, I use it about once a week and wish I did it daily, it clears up your nose very well and if you have allergy/congestion issues, it will reduce them. In my case, it severely reduced them making my life much better.

I highly recommend it, it's simple to do, and it just takes one or two tries to get used to it.

Have you tried Sudafed? Not the newer replacement Sudafed PE, but the original stuff?

I think it works pretty well. I don't have the neti pot but just the squeeze bottle from the same company. I got a sample of it from my allergy doctor and it worked pretty well, then I noticed Walmart carried the bottle + 50 packets for $15, 100 packets for $13, or the neti pot. So I just got the 100 packet refill. I don't need to use it very often, but its great when I get very congested.

I had bought some nasal drops, now have the same type of stuff as a spray (its just pseudoephedrine really), and it works kick ass in 5-15 minutes for clearing up even the most clogged of noses. But, I normally do it once at night, except when I wake up during the night or the next morning, my nose is clogged completely, even worse than before using it the night before (it that is possible). And it's weird, cause I only had used the stuff once the previous night, and I generally only use it once per day for 1-2 days every few weeks, at most. So I am nowhere near getting dependent on it or using it more than it says (not even close really), but even after just one use, it seems that 8 hours later and my stuff is effed up.

So I've kind of avoided using it lately after the past few times of having it get so much worse a while after using it once. I haven't had really any problems anyway, but if I do, I'll stick to the nasal rinse. I also have some generic saline spray, but it doesn't really tear through heavy congestion like the medicated saline spray.

As Eli said, the neti pot still doesn't work as well as the medicated spray. But you know yourself that you can't keep using it like that. So I'd suggest using the neti pot when you aren't completely clogged and you should get some results with a few days of use.

It looks kind of ridiculous to use, but ahha I think it is kind of funny anyway (the picture of the woman bending down to use it, hah) and who cares really if it works!

I was thinking about using one today, seems a bit complicated though, needs a mixture of salt and some other stuff. Also if you don't tilt your head the right way it will wash out into your mouth, yuck. I just took a Claratin-D instead as usual.

Agreed - the neti pot method isn't instant relief, but you will be glad you tried it. I was weary of it but it helped me a lot and it's the more natural way of dealing with the issue rather than taking medicine and so I would recommend it.

how are you using it?
i use a snot sucker from walgreens instead of the neti pot
i fill it with warm salt water, bend over the sink a bit and squirt it slowly into one nostril
it drains from the other nostril

Decongestant + antihistamine should do the trick. Actifed used to work just fine for me, but those damned meth addicts had to ruin it for all of us...

I got one today. Using it felt wonderful and it did clear up my sinuses pretty well. It didn't last long, but I think its still worth the trouble.
