i was wondering if they got one. do you think i need raid. i want to change the raid to a regular ide channel so i can put the cdrw on its own channel. and also do you think it will actually go that much faster if it was its own ide channel istead of sharing one with the regular cdrom? i dont plan on get two hds for the actual raid setup itself.

Just make the CDRW a master on IDE2 and make the regular CD a slave and it will be fine, keep the HD on it's own chanel IDE1. If you reall want Raid just add a card to the 8KHA+, it is better that way and if you change motherboards you can keep the raid card. But I think it is better if you are not using the raid function to keep things simple and hook it up the way I told you, the less stuff in your system that you have, the chances of having compatibility are much lower.

As far as "needing RAID" is concerned, you most likely don't. But.............since you wouldn't be here if you weren't an enthusiast, my feeling is that you should explore the potential of your hardware! Good luck

You've got the right idea. For only $13 more I got an epox raid board (4sda+), even though I don't use the raid function. I get ata 133 by using my hardrive with the raid ide, and run my cd and burner on the regular ide ports for better copies. The board you might want is the 8k3a+ with the kt333 chipset.

if i just go with the EPOX EP-8KHA+, and i put the cdrw on the master setting and the cdrom on the slave setting, would i get better cd burning from the cdrw. also, I am going to get a 52x cdrom, and will it go a little slower since it is a slave.

No, you would not get better burning and it is recommended that you put CD drive and CD-R/RW on seperate channels to get the most reliability in burning. Meaning, not having them on the same IDE cable. Probably not so much an issue anymore withthe burn=proof drives, but high-speed duping will be more efficient..

what is high speed duping?
