Do they stamp key codes on underside of Suzuki gas caps?

I lost my key to my bike which starts the ignition, opens the gas cap and unlocks the rear seat. I read that maybe the key code is stamped under the gas cap. I don't want to/don't know how to remove the ignition to find the code, although I'm sure it would be less costly than paying the $240 plus tax for the locksmith to make a new set of keys. Can any one confirm or deny that the key code is under there?

You know who probably knows the answer to this and could tell you in 5 minutes over the phone? The service department at your friendly local dealership.

Call a dealer, not an independent, and they should be able to get you an answer pretty quickly. They don't charge you just for asking a question.

Seriously.... I am losing my patience lately with the vague questions with no details. I've said this before, but IMO we really need a sticky that explains to put the year/make/model with ANY question you ask.

OP.. Somewhere around '98 and later suzuki started storing the key cuts along with the VIN. It is possible to order a new key from a dealer. That being said, they make it very difficult due to bike theft issues. I would be surprised if you are able to find any dealer who will just order the key like that unless they know you very well or the bike is there in person. I had a buddy who did this, and they actually ordered the key from suzuki who shipped it from japan...

If I were in your situation, I would remove the ignition lock (should be very easy) and take it to a locksmith. They should be able to disassemble the lock and cut a new key for fairly cheap. Call first and make sure they have blanks, as they're somewhat uncommon.

I also read it could possibly be on the helmet lock?

It's usually on the ignition, but the issue is that dealers aren't supposed to do this unless you have the actual little tag that came with the original keys...

I've heard of people who saved the number but lost the tag, and still could not get a dealer to order a key.

I called a local suzuki dealer. They said to do this basically, but when I called the lock smith he said he'd need the whole bike because that each lock ( ignition, gas cap, trunk) is slightly different and just having one of those things might not cut it.

How do I remove the ignition lock? People told me if you remove the ignition you need to drill out or grind down screws to get it out. Plus need a torx bit to loosen it? I don't have any personal experience or enough confidence to go drilling into my bike. Guess I could just get raped by that lock smith for $240 + tax for him to come to my house and make me a new key.

No... you don't need to drill anything. I don't know for sure about 2001, but most gsx-rs are two large torx bolts from the bottom. Google 'how to remove ignition 2001 gsxr' as I'm not going to do that for you.

The seat and helmet locks are single-sided, the ignition is usually double. He only really needs the ignition lock although there's a possibility that a key cut with just the ignition might not work perfectly with the other locks since the ignition tumblers are more worn down.

Basically, find a better locksmith and explain you only need ignition so you can ride the bike to him.

Yeah I will try to google/youtube that for my specific bike. Also how do I ride it to him if I don't have the key..? :-/ Hopefully one of my neighbors has the T40 that I think I would need because I hate buying tools that I will probably only use once.

Take the ignition off, take ignition to the locksmith, pay $40 to cut new keys, take ignition and new keys home, try new keys on the helmet and gas cap and if they don't work ride it back to the locksmith with the functional ignition.
