Do they sell something that accelerates encoding?

MP3 encoding can be done in realtime on P3-500 machines, so it's unlikely that you would want dedicated mp3 encoding hardware. In any event, the dedicated encoding hardware you are referring to is probably MPEG-2 video encoding hardware, such as the Hauppauge PVR-250/350. I hope this helps.
 
Well, I'm talking about when my band is recording we have a bunch of files open in a mixing editor and if we want to save everything it takes forever. Every instrument and individual drum has a track.
 
You will need to supply more information about your needs and your system. What format are you recording in? What mp3 encoding program are you using? How much processor, ram, and HDD do you have?
 
I bounce between Cubase SX and Adobe Audition. I'm running an Athlon XP 2400+ with 512 ram on a Gigabyte GA-7VRXP mobo, 9800 Pro (420/400), and M-Audio Delta 1010LT

I record in wav format which obviously can be saved in the blink of an eye. When it comes to saving in MP3 format it's slow.
 
I strongly recomend getting a P4, perhaps a 2.4c, and raid. Raid is an incredible jump from a single drive. Sounds like you have a hard drive speed limit.

EDIT: Wow, it was realy hard for me to recomend intel...
 
I cant give raw numbers as I dont own any intels, but google it and you should find a fair amount. Hyperthreading helps a lot.
