oil and filter change: $20 with coupon at dealer
22,500 mile service: $80 with coupon at dealer

the difference? the 22,500 mile service includes "lubricate locks and hinges, rotate tires, inspect coolant level"

of course i'm not about to pay $60 for those three things that i can do in my driveway in under an hour.

And they'll only do THAT if you are standing within 5 feet of them during the entire service.

Lube Locks ... use Lockease, either squeeze bottle or spray in will be fine

Hinges .... couple of drops of oil on the pivot pins and white lithium grease
where the metal parts move back and forth

Rotate Tires ... Jack up car, move rear to front & front to rear .. keep on same side

Check Coolant Level ... Check it in both the Overflow and if possible in the Radiator If needed, top off with a 50/50 mix of coolant / distilled water or use a Premix version from Prestone that is aleady 50/50 from the factory.

You can do all that including tire rotation in under an hour?

You can't? As long as the oil filter comes off without any grief the tire rotation takes the longest. Although I've never tried, I'm certain I could pull it off in under an hour even with just a single jack and a couple jack stands.

inspect coolant level takes 5 seconds

rotate tires myself, maybe 30. and that's using 1 jack and the spare.

how long can lubricating the locks and hinges take?

oil i let them do for $20. filter itself is $10 at wally world. one of the 'new' paper filters that they sell you less stuff and charge you 3x as much for. frankly i should do that myself too.

Well rotating the tires can be a pain depending on what vehicle you have. On my TA the rims are front/rear specific, so to rotate tires, Tires have to come off the rim and be mounted on the rim fro mthe other side as the tires are directional.

I've worked as a mechanic in dealerships in the past....

Almost all of the items beyond the basic service being done (fluid, filter, and part changes) are skipped or ignored.

If you are worried about warranty issues, then get a log book (or excel spreadsheet), and log everything you do yourself that isn't done by the dealer. Note date, time, products used, levels, etc and keep reciepts. Cover every maintenance point in the manual, and keep the docs in case you are ever questioned.

My mechanic shop do everything with an oil change include test drive as indicated by the Toyota/Lexus dealership for $79 CAD while the dealership shop charge $120 CAD for the same service.

Basic oil change from at the local mechanic is $59 CAD which is cheaper than Mr. Lube, etc....
