Do they make guns smaller than 9mm?

If so, why aren't they more common? If not, why don't they make them? It would see like making a 2mm gun would be an excellent detterent with out it being life threatening.

They do. It's called a BB rifle.

You've never heard of 5.56 mm or 7.62 mm rifles? Those are standard calibers used by armies around the world. If you meant handgun bullets smaller than 9 mm, I know FN has a 5.7 mm caliber handgun.

By no means am I an expert on firearms.

2mm? What the hell are you going to do it, throw the gun at someone?

The smallest callibers that are generally available are BBs (.177" or sometimes .22") and .22s.

Sounds like you should buy a paintball gun. Stings like a mother at close range.

And, it's not much of a deterrent.

Yes they do make guns that fire a smaller cal. I am pretty sure that .22 is the smallest that is widely available.

The last part of your question is absolutely wrong though. In a situation where you are forced to use a firearm to defend yourself or your family, there is no such thing as a "deterent". Although a .22 has the chance of actually bouncing around inside of you causing a huge amount of damage, If my rear end is on the line, I want my .40 cal that will STOP someone from shooting back at me AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.

Guns are not to deter people. If you are a responsible gun owner then a "bad guy" should NEVER see your gun until you are 100% ready to use it.

There's the .17 Hornady Magnum Rimfire and it's little brother the .17 mach 2. I know you can get pistols in .17 HMR don't know about the .17HM2.

they use smaller rounds so that they can shoot more?

They make .17 guns that will blow someone's head off. Same diameter as a BB. That's smaller than 9 mm.

Shooting someone with a gun like that would probably make them very mad.

  Less than 2 ft/lbs of muzzle energy

As somebody mentioned, .17 caliber (4.3mm) handguns are readily available at gunshows and specialty gun shops. There are lots of .17 and .22 handguns, as well as a few .223 handguns. All these cartridges (with the exception of .22 Short) were designed for use in a rifle, and later used in handguns. The smallest centerfire designed-for-handgun cartridge in widespread use that I know of is .32 caliber (8.1mm).

Edit: As far as what you originally asked about... That would defeat the purpose of guns in general. They're made to kill, not "annoy". It's generally a bad idea to use a gun in defense if you aren't ready to kill. If you want less-than-lethal, a taser makes much more sense. There's less potential for long-term injury than with lodging a bunch of 2mm lead flakes in someone's skin

A 7.62mm rifle round is actually substantially larger than a 9mm handgun round. The 5.56mm rifle round was designed, at least in part I believe, to allow soldiers to carry more ammunition than with the 7.62mm round. Because most fighting happens at close range, the power of the 7.62mm round was believed to be unnecessary.

If the "bad guy" knows that you own fire arms and that you are home, the "bad guy" may think twice about breaking into your home.

If the apolcolypse was upon us and you had to choose which of these two homes to break into, which would you choose? Charlton Heston's home? Or Leonard DiCaprio's home?
(Personally, I'd see if Heston would just invite me in... I tend to believe that would be one of the more fortified positions in case all heck breaks loose.)

Actually, guns are expensive, easily sold, and portable. For self defense, I'd prefer a good old-fashioned break-action 10 ga. shotgun - regardless of wether it's actually loaded, it's really, really intimidating to have a small cannon pointed at you.

As an added bonus, break action weapons are easy to load an unload, and it's also simple to tell wether you have ammunition in it or not. (Just leave it open.) They're useless for commiting most crimes, as you only have one shot - after which, the police fill you with lead, or someone tackles you.

Also, rabid fangirls are a much better deterrent than any weapon.

In response to the original thread, the most common sub-9mm pistol is a .22 "birdshot" pistol. A neighbor of mine has one - while still a small pistol, it has a very heavily weighted barrel, and recoil is nearly nonexistent. It also has a 30-round clip, and as any mortician will tell you, a .22 fired into the head will bounce around merrily and kill you just as well as anything else - if not better.
