Every wall jack i've seen requires you to splice the wires into the jack on the backside. Do they make a version for dummies which just lets you plug in an existing ethernet cable right into the backside (the walljack acting almost as a coupler)?

I think the item is inline coupler that physically fit into the wall plate.

To use it you need an RJ-45 terminated cable on the inside.

These couplers are Not so good to be used between cables, it is usually used as an emergency short term temp. solution.

you probobly want a tooless jack, like this

stay away from the inline couplers, only good for a quick fix.

aphex, yes, you can get couplers as a keystone. They work okay. They are generally not used because pulling the cable through the walls with with connectors on it usually is a bunch of trouble (requires bigger holes be drilled, possibility of snags, doesn't bundle well, etc.).

A punch-down really is quite easy. Get a good 110 punch-down tool, the Ideal Punchmaster is like $60 and worth it. The little plastic tool included with some consumer-oriented jacks is useless.

Thanks for the heads up on the coupler Jack, jlazz and cmetz. I actually ran a terminated cable and an unterminated in the event I goofed something up (just did this a few weeks ago but hadn't terminated the un-terminated cable yet, I've been working on other projects).

I'll report back if I have any trouble with the terminated cable but so far so good, this was for my home (off grade so it wasn't terribly difficult to run the cable), so the bigger holes just meant I had more of a mess to clean up (still need to do that).
