Do they make 'digital picture frames' that play back moving .gif and .mjpeg files? Moving / animated pics, rather than static ones cycling?

Is this a thing? Just curious.

If not, then you could maybe build one out of a RPi, but those are also in short supply these days.

Edit: I know that this seems like a "tech" question, but I wasn't certain if it belonged in Mobile (it's not "mobile"), or Peripherals (since it's technically not a peripheral, it's stand-alone), or where it might fit.

Supposedly...I googled "digital frame that plays videos." Got a bunch of hits...didn't pursue it past that.

Cheap tablet? A real quick look says digital frames cost about as much as a tablet. Not sure why I'd want a severely gimped tablet.

You could get a cheap smart tv and plug a flash drive or hard drive into it. That’s how we use our tv for the most part. We have it playing videos from our wildlife cams in random order.

That's a nice idea, but this would be a B-day gift for Mom, and she can barely figure out her Android phone. Something that's hands-off, that she can just plug into the wall and go, would be much preferable in this instance.

This SHOULD be simple, but yeah I honestly can't think of anything that would do this without getting into custom stuff like a RPI that has a startup script to a custom local web page. I suppose some picture frames may support animated gifs but I don't think it's something that would be easy to find. Ex: it probably wouldn't be advertised.

If you are willing to do something custom, the smallest monitor you can find with a vesa mounted RPI, all pre-connected and configured could work maybe. You'd basically set up the RPI so it runs a custom program or launches a local web page at startup, so ideally, it should be able to simply cycle through everything that is on a USB stick. Then it would be easy to add more pictures, you just remove USB stick and add more and put it back. But it does in fact seem like RPIs are hard to get now days. Could use a thin client but that's starting to step into over engineering territory.

my inlaws really like their nixplay. There is an app that all of us can add photos to it, also does short videos and gifs and whatnot. They also look more like a regular picture frame.
