Do the normal forware drivers work for the 8600m series?

Odds are ... NO. Most laptops use a "Go" version of a particular chip, which may or may not be physically different, but more than likely NVIDIA has stripped the PCI ID from the INF file which means the installer won't recognize the hardware and hence not install. It will, however, install with a hacked INF file... assuming support for the chip has been built into the driver core, may or may NOT actually work.

I tried the hacked INF thingy about a year ago, and while the display worked, certain other things did not...for example, when I closed my lid the system didn't hibernate, and the battery was dead when I opened it two hours later.

There were a couple of other things broken that I forget now...but a drained battery was enough to get me to switch back to Go drivers.

I have not had a lot of luck with the Nvidia Go series cards and using hacked drivers. However, I have had a lot of luck with the ATI/AMD cards and hacked drivers, however, that doesn't help you any.
