Do the marketing suits at Apple actually listen to the songs they use to promote their products?

I don't watch much TV, so I don't know how long this ad has been out:

Apple iPhone - You, Me, and the Bourgeoisie

The song's a little catchy, so I started paying attention to the words last night, and what I came up with doesn't make much sense. It seems to be (yet another) song espousing our need to get back to basics and not consume ourselves with the excesses of life...

... you know, with things like the iPhone.

[edit]

Courtesy of Strk, here's the meat and potatoes of what I'm referring to:

Imported Water
Cars we drive wherever we want to
Clothes we buy it's sweatshop labor
Drugs from corporate enablers
We're not living the Good life

Love can free us from all excess
From our deepest debts
Cause when our hearts are full we need much less

Yea i know we long for something fine
When we pine for higher ceilings
And bourgeois happy feelings

So the iPhone fits into this ideology... where again?

Here I am with all the pleasures of the first world
Laid out before me who am I to breakdown?

Everyday I wake up,
I choose Love
I choose Light
And I try, it's too easy just to fall apart

Oh my baby don't be so distressed
Were done with politesse
It's time to be so brutally honest about
The way we think long for something fine
When we pine for higher ceilings
And bourgeois happy feelings

And here we are with the pleasures of the first world
It's laid out before us, who are we to break down?

Everyday we wake up
We choose Love
We choose light
And we try, it's too easy just to fall apart

Plastic Bottles
Imported Water
Cars we drive wherever we want to
Clothes we buy it's sweatshop labor
Drugs from corporate enablers
We're not living the Good life
Unless we're fighting the Good fight
You and Me just trying to get it right

In the center of the first world
It's laid out before us, who are we to break down?

Everyday we wake up
We choose Love
We choose light
And we try, it's too easy just to fall apart

Love can free us from all excess
From our deepest debts
Cause when our hearts are full we need much less

Yea i know we long for something fine
When we pine for higher ceilings
And bourgeois happy feelings

But Here we are in the center of the first world
It's laid out before us, who are we to break down?

That's kind of funny.

This is what happens when hippies taste success. There are very few people out there who actually follow through on shedding their materialistic ways... certainly no one at Apple, and certainly not the members of the band ("The Submarines" is the band, by the way) who sold the rights to their song to appear in a TV ad.

I'm not saying that materialism is necessarily a bad thing, I'm just being honest about it. I don't sing the praises of living a simple life while rolling around in money.

The band that made it had no problem selling it to Apple to use. Way to stand behind their morals ;)

Do we know that they actually had any say in the matter?

Two of their songs were also used in "Grey's Anatomy."

Their label is Nettwerk, which is a small, anti-RIAA record label. Doesn't mean they hate money. I don't know whether the band or the label negotiated the deals with Apple and ABC, but I doubt either one would have turned it down in principle.

You think they actually know the words to any song they advertise with?

reminds me of Life of Brian.

Brian: Look, you've got it all wrong! You don't NEED to follow ME, You don't NEED to follow ANYBODY! You've got to think for your selves! You're ALL individuals!
The Crowd: Yes! We're all individuals!
Brian: You're all different!
The Crowd: Yes, we ARE all different!
Man in crowd: I'm not...
The Crowd: Sch!

Anyways, no worse than the Disney/Pixar movie WALL-E - Consumerism is bad! It destroyed Planet Earth! Now go buy the DVD and toys!

Apple would have you believe they're way is the way back to basics.

Didn't you hear? They're the greenest computer company on the planet!

Wasn't there a very recent study that actually identified Apple as the least green out of Apple, Dell, HP, and Toshiba?

Here we go:

Greenpeace Gives Macbook Air "B-"
Greenpeace Deems iPhone "Toxic"
Greenpeace Slams Apple Over "World's Greenest..." Claim
... more

Did Jobs shit in Greenpeace's Wheaties or what?

No, they just claim Microsoft uses a larger percentage of their budget on advertising in an AD of their own...

Or how Wrangler uses the song "Fortunate Son" to advertise their patriotic, all-American jeans, even though Fortunate Son is really talking about the evils of patriotism.

The people who run Apple are incredibly intelligent. Most of their customers are morans. Making your product "cool" requires some serious marketing ability.
