I think that a Kobe for Allan Houston AND Kurt Thomas would be a GREAT trade for the lakers.

to have Thomas as the Backup Center/PF and Houston as the Spot up shooter, would in my opinion make the Lakers more dangerous than they are now with Kobe.

to answer the question: Could the Lakers win a championship this year without Kobe?

i think so.

Of course, but it would be damn difficult. With Kobe, things are so much easier. As you just said, can you even imagine a 3-man fastbreak with Malone and Kobe on the wings and Payton pushing the ball? :Q

Yes I can.
From the first few games and the preseason games, it seems like Malone has lost his court awareness.
Payton seems overly agressive. More than his Seattle/Milkwaukee days.
Kobe is definitely need otherwise the Lakers might only go a 50+ win record :)

Hmm, that would be an interesting trade. As much as I like Kobe on the Lakers, that deal doesn't seem half bad for both parties. Now only if Houston wasn't so overpaid ...

agreed, houston is overpaid, but he is a PREMIERE spot up shooter. probably better than Reggie at this point in their respective careers.

Karl and Shaq posting up, Payton dishing and Houston for the spot up shooter.

plus Kurt Thomas is a VERY VERY good PF/C.

Sorry to bring this thread back but last night's game against the Bucks should solidify the importance of Kobe on this Laker team. He's absolutely one of the best (if not the best) clutch player in the league right now. He lives for the 4th quarter comeback and carries this team when all seems hopeless. He did it all last season and he did it again last night.

At one point, yes.

At this time, he's just full of himself, distracted with his life, and uncooperative with his teammates. He plays for himself and not for the team which is not what it takes to bring the team to another championship.

He doesn't want to stay with the Lakers anyway and will likely option out of his contract next year. Good riddance, because no one likes his attitude anyway.
