Dan... I already answered your question... yes it exists unless someone planned a multi-year prank towards a company that wouldn't care either way.
I know someone else here has worked with or talked to someone with MP's also... I want to know the personalities they took.

WTF?! I didn't start anything! I'm simply defending myself, goddamnit. :| Fvcking leave me alone.

lol, or so I noticed. Anyway, Nik, think about what you said. Lets put it in terms more akin to your environment:

Person A) Broadband has a much higher (potential) transfer speed than a dialup modem/connection
Person B aka: Nik) I'm not sure I buy that crap.

Wouldn't you expect someone to rectify this amazingly erroneous statement? That's what I did, but you took it as a personal attack. You're going to have a tough life ahead of you if every time you are corrected, you take it personally. Keep in mind I used a stereotype to describe anyone who's in to computers. It wasn't personal, much like how people say "die" in other threads. Don't you understand that 90% of Anandtech is computer-oriented and computer oriented people are generally labeled "socially inept"?

There really isn't any debate on whether split personalities exist or not, so I don't know where you got that from.

Regardless of whether or not I agree with what someone said, belittling someone over it isn't really worth it. It took me a long time to learn it. Maybe it will take you a while to learn it too. Who knows. When you do finally learn that, people won't be so opposed to talking to you. Whether or not there's a debate about split personalities, I don't buy it. Psychologists can write off anything with some chemical imbalance or something else and prescribe drugs for everything.

When you're willing to have a mature conversation, I'll be here waiting. :)

It wasn't meant to belittle you, you just took it that way and got pissed really really fast.

That said, and getting back to the original topic, yes it's very possible and there are PLENTY of recorded cases. However, one personality would not be omnipotent like Brad Pitt was so that's a shortcomming of the movie. I have no idea what Nik thinks these people are doing (I kinda doubt they're faking) and they have done tons of research on the topic and they (the medical professionals) all agree that it is very real and extreme cases aren't easily cured.

I would love to see some information stating that there is no such thing but I doubt there's any serious sources out there that has backing from professionals.

Nik, your problem is that if we don't agree with you, you throw a fit. Every thread you insert your opinoin in, you pull this same crap. After someone makes it a point to let you know that your views are not the only view, you start with the FU, leave me alone, I'm leaving crap. You were corrected on a mistake you made, and suddenly he is attacking you

when I am amazingly bored.. i'd like to see the two of you just argue it out in real life.. would be fun to watch.
another thing i noticed... when people are just responding normally.. they type like crap...
but.. when we have something.. people resort to "You sir are..." and all perfect grammar and stuf.. its just funny to watch

While the original purpose of this thread is all but lost, I think through careful observation we can all learn a little something about the psyche of your typical pasty faced, virgin uber geek.

First we start with the bait, in this case an innocent comment made by FFMCobalt.

Now our troll chimes in with his infinite wisdom, and instead of politely correcting FFMCobalt's mistake and providing a link to back him up, he post a flame. This could be caused by several reasons including but not limited too: he was bullied as a child and this is his way of getting revenge so to speak, he was mollested by Catholic priest and is so fvcked up that he needs no reason, he's an asshole.

After several post go by and no one backs up the bait, other geeks may come out to feast as well. These are sad, pathetic creatures feeding off of what others have started, most of whom's only real social interaction comes through the pale glow of the computer screen. The bandwagon effect soon takes place, and thus a good thread must be laid to rest just so these poor creatures can have their brief glimmer of dominace and superiority.

Actually, there is a debate as to whether or not split personalities do exist. I've had professors who have taken both sides of the issue, and there are enough on both end of the spectrum in the clinical realm to present a debate. The condition does exist in the DSM, but that doesn't necessarily mean that it truly does occur. Perhaps it's just an extreme form of disassociation, during which the person is in fact aware of all the "personalities" present.

Besides that, I don't think I've come across a psychological text yet that states definitely whether or not dissociative identity disorder is a "real" disease. They always label it as controversial.

I can believe it, fully and completely, as I've witnessed it firsthand.

I don't question what the human mind is or is not capable of. It's really easy for the mind to play tricks on you. Drinking until you think you can fly is a good example of such a trick. :p

I don't know if I would say that two people exist in one person... but split personalities exist. Though I think what you are refering to is multiple personalities... a split personality would be when one person has two sides to the way they act ie. nice person, mean person. But I am pretty sure you meant it in the fight club way where two people in the same body, so I am going to have to say that yes it is possible, and I am sure that you can find doccumented cases somewhere on the internet but I dont want to search for it now.

Side note... FFMCobalt if you are so annoyed with whats being posted in this thread then why not just leave it.

By the way, the new "technical" term for it is Dissociative Identity Disorder. I guess the theory now is that it's an advanced form of dissociation.

Yeah, I thought someone would say that but that's more of a technicalitiy than the subject at hand. What the OP meant was, "Do people have behaviors much like Tyler Durden from Fight Club?" to which (almost) everyone can agree, yes they do. Now whether it's disassociation or some other form of illness is more a naming convention than anything.

That's great and all but either you missed the point entirely or you felt like giving ole' MAME a talkin' to. That's fine and all, I'm not going to blow up at you but I'll say a little something before dropping it...again. First of all, I'm not a pasty face, virgin uber geek. I actually wish I was more of a geek as I'm dwarfed by knowledge and experience in all my CS classes. I go outside plenty and I'm definately not a virgin. That's pretty irrelevant anyway.

The entire point of my original "flamebait" comment was to imply that FFM made a bold statement that is pretty much wrong. I really think it pales in comparrison to half the other stuff you see in threads on a daily basis. Seriously, how often to people tell other people to die or st@b something? My comment wasn't supposed to be taken at face value. It was just based on a stereotype. I mean seriously, I don't know Nik nor should he be offened by a comment I make about him.

If other people agree with me then maybe I'm not as wrong as you think I am.

And finally, it's so easy to find a link that describes a Multiple Personality Disorder that it's seriosuly pointless. It makes much more sense if he posted a site that claims it doesn't exist.
