Wow. I was physically present at the first flight of spaceship one. Now, I think it's unreasonable to think the employees of scaled composites are in on the conspiracy. From the altitude that they flew to, you can CLEARLY see the curvature of the earth. Don't you think that if they had gotten up there and the earth was flat the first thing he would have said when he landed was "OMFG! It's a conspiracy! The earth is flat!"

don't let things like physics of missle trajectories sway your opinion either.
Spand some time in a madarsa and then say it...

come again?
spend some time in a madrasa, let them brainwash you, then lets see how you feel about our earth...

I'll pass. There is plenty of brainwashing in this country too just not on this topic. I would like to believe I would retain my critical thinking ability regardless of where I was living.
you have the education and wisdom provided by your country's system... they dont stand a chance...

There's more to the article than these quotes. Below there is an Iraq TV debate about the Earth being flat or not according to the Koran.

Here's one I found in Iraq. He speaks (subtitles) of the Earth being flat according to the Koran. video

Wow!

Right at the top. I moved it there because people weren't viewing it for the intended discussion when it was at the bottom. I edited this very soon after the post and I saw where comments were ignoring it.

It seems people don't see it anyway.

When did the notion of a flat earth become pop and why? A hypothesis wot comes to mind is that it aids in maintaining the status quo since exploration could result in "falling off the edge". Clearly, a curvature of earth would have been common knowledge to any seafaring folks at least. Large ships do not just appear to become smaller with distance, but gradually disappear from the bottom up. I think it it is important to distinguish betwixt knowledge and superstition. The latter may persist even in the face of the former's long standing. As inferred by the article, the knowledge was documented at least two millennia before the earth was circumnavigated, yet even at that time ignorance persisted amongst some and was in the interest of others to maintain.

Well the discussion was about what Koran says- Koran's interpretation... not what today's ppl think...

but the words "Muslims" and "Koran" in the topic line were more than enough to start a powerful Troll

The thing about Muslims is that some of them take the Koran way too seriously. If it explicitly stated that the Earth was flat, they would probably attempt to kill anyone who tried to show otherwise because it would cast doubt upon their precious book.

May ? Does,

It's open to being predicated although it may not be. It appears equal, but it's not.

The Flat Earth Society is a parody...

You know what's bizarre though? We are more accepting of the 50% of our country that are creationists, even though their beliefs are equally ridiculous and easily disproven.

Edit: No educated europeans in the late middle ages thought the earth was flat. Columbus spent his time convincing isabella that his calculations about the size of the earth were right and he could make the crossing to china (he estimated it to be vastly smaller than it is -- scholars at the time knew the size, they just thought the atlantic was a REALLY wide ocean).

Yes you are right. The muslims further developed what the greeks knew. The greeks knew but the christians of the dark ages didn't.

What happened, they used to be so advanced now they are so backwards.

Instead of progress and prosperity they gave preference to quick riches and made those people leaders that did not know how to lead. Something like the US is going through right now. And instead of progressing they've gone backwards. I've heard that some muslim "scholars" still think the world is on a cow's horn which is on a snake's head. I don't know how ridiculous that is!

At around 1000AD Islam was the most advanced state in the world. Then wars and power struggles meant they lost what they had. They went hundred steps back after taking 10 in front. Not all muslims are like that. However, the muslims that discuss philosophy, science, and social sciences are never in the news. Therefore you think that Islam is only about what these uneducated self proclaimed mullah portray it to be.

But, more importantly, where do flat-earthers stand on tazers?

Everyone knows electrons are round.

It's not the shape that matters though. It's where they flow.

An electron is a point charge with no physical dimensions whatsoever, round, flat, or otherwise. Its electromagnetic field is spherical in shape, but the electron itself is no bigger than a point in space.

The Quran does not say that the earth is flat. Muslims knew that the earth was round before the Catholic church decreed such in ~800 AD. The flat earther bit is a myth.

However, using the fact that subatomic elemental particles, like electrons and quarks, are point charges without physical dimension, does give credence to the argument that the 3 spatial dimensions that we perceive may be an illusion or even a construct of our consciousnesses.

It would be nice if more within the Islamic world would step up in a positive way.

If everything I hear coming from Islamic culture happens to be negative, then I'm likely to think that Islamic culture is a pretty negative thing.

'Nutha thought: geographic knowledge is strategically and economically valuable. Navigation and maps were closely guarded state secrets. Heck, on the micro level even sailors were purposely kept ignorant so that mutiny would be futile. So, knowledge could exist without it being common. Indeed, as said, it could be beneficial to maintain general ignorance. Alternate trade routes betwixt Europe and Asia certainly would have hurt Middle East (Islamic) treasuries.
