Do some combinations just not OC?

I'm building a low-cost rig for my brother and this is what I put together:

ECS NF650iSLIT-A motherboard
Intel C2D E4600 processor
OCZ Reaper HPC 2x1GB DDR2 800 memory
GeForce 7900GT (2x SLI)

The video cards were my old cards... I upgraded to a couple of 8800GTS cards.

Anyway, got the system put together and it's rock solid and quite speedy at the stock settings. Was going to play with the OCing settings a little and I couldn't get the system to overclock at all. Even a minor 25MHz adjustment to the FSB would cause the system to freeze at POST.

I clocked the RAM down a little, raised timings, upped the voltage a little, disabled all onboard devices, made sure spread spectrum was disabled, tried again and still -- no post.

I've had some good experiences in overclocking with the nVidia 6 series boards (EVGA 650i Ultra + e4400 @ 3GHz is just an example), but this is my first experience with the ECS NF650iSLIT-A.

Comments? Suggestions?

My first thought would be that ECS boards are not known for their overclocking capabilities.

I would also make sure you're running the RAM 1:1 and that your PCI-e frequency is locked at 100.

That was my first thought as well. A couple of reviews touted the overclocking capabilities of this particular board, but this thing only cost me like $60 and was more than likely built with low-cost components.

*nod* That was how I originally started out, then I lowered the frequency of the RAM by using another ratio, thinking maybe the RAM was causing the freezing.

I'll just leave it at stock. My brother will be more than happy with it the way it is (he's upgrading from a 1.2GHz Athlon Thunderbird if I remember correctly).
