do socket 754 boards support dual channel memory?

thinking about doing first major upgrade in a few years & none of the socket 754 boards I looked at say they support dual channel memory-do they all ? or none?
 
The memory controller is in the Socket754 processor, so back up a step and look at them instead. The Socket754 processors don't have dual-channel memory controllers, but Socket940 processors do, and Socket939 processors will (when they arrive to market). So the answer is that if you want dual-channel memory controllers right now, you need either an Opteron or an Athlon64 FX, a compatible Socket940 motherboard, and Registered ECC DDR memory (a requirement of both the Opteron and A64FX).
 
No dual channel but in a way it is there - you can only run two sticks for performance. If you put three the performance drops. 😀
That is what I call "retarded dual channel."

Most nForce2 boards have 3 DIMM slots, so if you fill them all up then it isn't dual channel anymore?

You CAN have 3 sticks of RAM in dual channel, one controller just deals with more memory than the other.

Because DIMM slots 0 and 1 are on the first channel and 3 is the 2nd channel. So for 1 GB of RAM AND dual channel you could set something up like this...

DIMM 0 = empty
DIMM 1 = 512
DIMM 2 = 512

DIMM 0 = 256
DIMM 1 = 256
DIMM 2 = 512

Or you could have 768...

DIMM 0 = 256
DIMM 1 = 256
DIMM 2 = 256

DIMM 0 = empty
DIMM 1 = 512
DIMM 2 = 256

And the list goes on...

I only said that in 754 you should not expect to be able to use 3 dimms successfully, that is all. Meaning that you can use 2 only to get a decent performance. Since 754 has no dual channel I call this performance a retarded dual channel, that is all. No reference to any of the members here.
On the contrary this "miocardia" guy has taken a personal attack approach on me, and I am not the only one who has been adressed that way by him.
That needs explanation?

Yes, and you will still have dual-channel, as long as both channels have the same amount of ram (i.e.-- 2x256 sticks in one channel, 1x512 stick in the other).

Yes, and you will still have dual-channel, as long as both channels have the same amount of ram (i.e.-- 2x256 sticks in one channel, 1x512 stick in the other).

It doesn't have to be the same amount, just the same type, for example... it all has to be 32x64... you can't use 32x64 and 16x64.

I will try to sumarize how dual channel works.

Dual channel, is a memory architecture that alternates data between 2 channels to do 2 things. One thing dual channel does is increase memory bandwith, the other thing dual channel does is lower latency. The Socket 754 does not support any form of dual channel, therefore 1, 2, or 3 sticks would all perform equally assuming they were the same quantity.

To run dual channel in a dual channel board, all you have to do is have some memory in each channel. although you can run with uneven sizes in each channel, it is not recomended becuase, if there is 256MB in one channel and 512MB in the other channel, then the 256 will be fully dual channel with 256MB of the other stick, while the remaining 256MB will not be dual channel. But if there was 256 in one channel, and 256 in the other, then you would have 100% dual channel.

Dual channel can have uneven dimm sizes, but dual channel will only actually be working with equal amounts.
