do "slot exhaust fans" do ANYTHING?

Hmm.. to be blunt, my case is a piece of crap with no spot for an 80mm exhaust fan. I need to create some kind of exhaust solution as my CPU temps are just tooooo high.. I think they may be causing some instability in my rig.. Anyway, since the case is so crappy, I'm going to replace it soon. I don't want to bother modding it right now to put an exhaust fan in... could I throw in two of those "slot coolers" you see @ newegg and expect them to help at all?

I was wondering the same thing. Never used them before and was thinking about getting one also. Wish I could help but I am sure someone will help up both out. 🙂

A slot exhaust fan WILL reduce your case temps somewhat, especially if you currently don't have any exhaust fan. I used a slot cooler on a previous case I had that didn't have an exhaust fan, and it reduced the temperature several degrees. The difference in temperature may just be enough to make your system a bit more stable. One more thing: if you put the slot cooler close to your video card, it will help keep it cooler while keeping the heat generated from the video card from reaching the CPU, a win/win situation for both the video card and the CPU.

Good Point 😀

they work well for me. i use 2 80mm intake and 2 of these slot fans for exhuast, and my case temp is 30 degrees when in my computer cabinet, and 27 when sitting out on the desk. 8 and 5 degrees above ambient respectively. i think i got mine for 5-6 bucks a piece shipped. they are pretty quiet also.

I have 2 intake and 2 exhaust fans (panaflos and enermax 80mm) also so dont think I need any but I'll see how my Video card does for heat. Like the idea of 1 by it 🙂. thanks

Well, when I put my hand in the exhaust of a slot fan, I feel warm air...so I figure
they do something. The point about it cooling a video card is a good one...that is
the main reason I use them. I put one of these in every system I build....but I also
put in a front intake fan, a hard drive fan, and a rear exhaust fan...so I probably do not count 😀

Sweet. I'll put one below my R8500 and one on top of it.. hopefully that'll lower my temps and let me O/C the card =)

I have a lian li pc 65 with 2 intake fans, a hdd cooler, one case exhaust fan, and two slot exhaust coolers. I maintain a 22-23 C (about 72 F) degree system temp. Thats about 2-3 degrees above ambient. I know slot coolers do something.

Next question is where to get one of these for a resonable price. All the ones I have seen are around $20. It doesn't seem worth it to me for that price.

$7.99 @ frys

Ambient temp = room temp. I'm guessing? If so, 25 degrees is the room temperature I've always been used to during chem/bio labs in college =P.

You can get this one for $7 + $5 shipping (stays at $5 even if you add a bunch of stuff). It seems to work good in my rig and Bestbyte has done a good job with my orders.

They can be found for cheap...

I have used one in a micro case running a K62 450 for years along side a Banshee..it keeps the little case very cool considering its size and airflow characteristics.
Only other fan is a Antec 80mm in the front.

I would say don't bother with them. I had one and it didn't lower the case temps at all, in the end I removed it to free-up the PCI slot again. Most of them are also very cheaply made and will fail after a couple of weeks/months.

They are cheap so I guess its no great loss to buy one and see how you go but my suggestion would be use the cash to buy a real 80mm case fan instead.

Built up a number of systems and use pci fans in all of em. Part of my overall approach to syst.cooling along with intake and exhaust fans.I can feel a good blast of air comming out the back of the cpu tower so it's moving air..

I found out that the stability problems with my rig are non-heat related 😵 soooo.. these fans probably aren't going to help too much, however I already ordered a pair of 'em for $13 shipper at www.abilitywholesale.com. I'll put them in anyway and keep searching for the stability problem, lol.

I used one when I had a Voodoo 3 3000. Those cards ran pretty hot. The slot cooler lined up with the V3 passive HS and pulled the heat off it and out of the case. It cooled the video card very well and also removed all that heat from the case. For that app, it worked great.

They help more or less when placed in different locations (i.e. PCI slot) Probably the best is the PCI directly below the AGP slot because it will help create a rush of air over your vid card and keep it cool (good for gamers and vid card OC nuts). As for helping your processor temps it really won't do much, it's simply too far away but it will increase circulation in your case which can help system temps which in turn can lower ur cpu temps. One warning, most slot fans block much of their outflow with fancy grills and extra supports, you should remove them for optimal performance. For example I dremeled out the meteal PCI slot grill and then cut out the small plastic mold supports so there is essentially no restriction to airflow. I only see about a 1C sys temp change with my PCI slot fan running, but I see a huge leap in OC ability with my vid card 🙂 hope this helps...
